I know this isn't a standard hunting thread, but it's the only place that has the right people in it
Putting this up since people usually toss their hides before they know someone wants them.
I'm hoping to find people in Central Alberta who don't want their deer hides - I'm based in Edmonton but can drive around to pick them up. I've been teaching myself various tanning methods and find the biggest barrier is getting hides to practice on. Many methods really need a good chunk of hide to experiment on or you miss important details, and most livestock have hides that're too heavy. I'm looking for any deer hide that hasn't had time to go bad, if it hasn't been cut to ribbons or is turning funny colors, I can use it.
For those interested - I mostly bark tan using different solutions - acorn, willow, bark, tea, quebracho etc. I'm expanding into brain tanning as well, which I find a lot tougher, and am trying out numerous recipes and old and modern techniques to try to get nicer, softer and more consistent results.
On a side note, if someone has a spare snowshoe hare hide I'd be happy to do a fur on or off tutorial for those that're interested. I only ever see hares in the city otherwise I'd go get one myself
