After hearing different opinions on hunting techniques, I'm curious how close you guys get to deer. I'm in Southern Ontario and they're pretty cautious here but I've had a 6 point buck within 5 feet without knowing I was there, once shot an 8 pointer at 6 yards too. So how close do you get? ;)

Had a doe come so close once that I could have pet her, and had two does walk right up with only some tall grass and barbwire fence between us. I find if a deer catches your movement and you swing your arm left and right like a tail, it puts deer at ease( with does at least). First time I was told that I laughed, but it really does work. Last year my daughter and I did the tail thing, and had two does walk within 15 ft and kept closing in until my daughters glove flew off and the deer hi tailed it out of there. We laughed all day about that one.

i had a 6-8 point buck mount me lol... yup no joke!
AND i had my Rifle and "Back up toy" on me...
too busy laughing my ass off to shoot it...
note... if you Dont know how to use a call Watch out!!! he came from behind me!

And i live in the City Right by the River so i hand feed the deer.. (i walk down the River in the winter all the time.)

Was in South Saskatchewan on the opening day of rifle season (the dawn firefight) once.
Near the small town of Coderre,on the banks of the Wood River a doe was distracted by other hunters 180 degrees from me on this windy day. I crept up within 3 feet of her just before pulling the trigger.

Dam.. thatz Nutz i bet you got Covered in blood & brain matter

Many times bow hunting from ground blinds I could have put up my hand and touched a doe.Shot one 6 point buck years ago so close I shot the gun from my lap sideways and he fell with his head not 3 feet from my foot. I am positive if I didnot shoot he would have walked over or on my feet.

Shot a small buck at 2-3 feet a few years back. He charged me when I let a grunt out from the deer call. Shot him from the hip with a .270. Then I shot the doe that was with him at about 15 yards.

It was one of those snow falls where the flakes were big and fluffy but coming down heavy. I followed their tracks for quite a while in the thick stuff and eventually stalked right up on them.

Last year bow hunting had deer run by me, less than 5 feet. Let the arrow go, strike me down if I'm lying, the deer jumped over the arrow. It probably creased the skin as it went under.....

Standing side by side with one while firing at the pistol bay at the range. The doe was VERY interested in what I was doing. For hunting though, closest I've been is ~10 feet it looked too small to me though, so I didn't take the shot despite it not having fawn spots.

spot and stalk with fresh snow is awesome while bowhunting. two consecutive years i made the shots at 11 and 12 yards after lengthy stalks each time. hunting from a stand really sucks after you've felt the rush from sneaking up on multiple deer and making a good shot.

its not hunting unless you can hear the deer fart :)

Years ago I was waiting for a bear to come into in a bee yard and never heard him come up along side the truck. I felt his warm breath on my forearm before I saw him; as he "checked out" what was in the open window. That gave me a bit of a start. I couldn't move till he was done investigating or I would have scared him off. I shot him a few moments later.
sorry didn't mean to hijack thread

I've had a doe zig zag between our hunting party as we were pushing bush. That got a bit scary when the deer was 2 metres away and everyone was following it with their guns. Fortunately, the muzzles dropped momentarily until the deer was clear of me and the next guy it practically hip checked on the way through us. Last guy in our line took the shot.

My average shot for bow is about 5 yards. My hunting party says they're going to get me a spear. The closest I've been lately is the buck I got this year. His tail actually touched my face. Thank god my truck window was rolled down. Damn thing got its leg stuck in my rim and spun like a top after his body shortened my pickup by 3". Turns out deer and metal are pretty pliable at 125km/h

Close enough!:D

This big buck (233 dressed ) was walking slowly toward me ,wind was good, motionless i shot it with my 44 mag open sight Trapper at 5 feet direct in the ear... JP

We got my cousin's 12" drop tine mule deer this fall at about 5 feet. Spot and stalk with archery, all on film! It's one thing to have a young naive deer close, but another to have an old mature buck that's been hunted for years. He was on his way down hill as he was 7 and a half years old. It's a shame his frame isn't the 190" it used to be in 2008. To be fair he completely eluded us for the past 2 years as to the point we thought he had died over winter.
