Hi all,
I got back late lastnight from the deer hunt. We hunt Haliburton area and ussually do quite well.
( ive posted my reports the last couple years )
Opening morning we got 2 does and a small buck by 11am.
Tues we got a doe in the morning and a nice 8 pointer in the afternoon.
Wed- FOGGGGGG.... crappy weather = hard hunting.. we didnt hunt much ( most guys slept in ) and we didnt see anything.
Thurs-morning hunt produced nothing but on the afternoon drive we got a nice 6 pointer and took us DEEP into the highlands ....went 700 yards from where it was hit !! many shots later the brute was down...crazy how a buck can go 700 yards on 3 legs ! he went up STEEP hills through deep brush and swap ...accross a creek...crazy... we had to drag him a couple hungred yards and then the other guys were chainsawing a path through the bush to get the atv in ... intense..
All the other guys are still hunting today ( i had to be back for work ) so I hope to hear more good news on saturday..
a couple interesting stats
---- all 6 deer were shot with buckshot... 4 of them were headshots
---- 2 deer were missed with a rifle
-----all deer we hit were found
overview++++++++++++++++
---- i know there have been bad things to say about buckshot but after our success if you use it in the right situation it is deadly... ( during drives when hunters are close by and moving shots are normal + dense bush)
first deer 1 shot with buckshot...didnt move 10 feet ( shot moving directly towards my hunter)
2nd deer was shot during a drive and didnt leave where it was shot ( body shot )
3rd deer was shot by me ... it ran right at me and stopped ... head on 1 shot and it dropped and twitched for a couple mins
4th deer was shot during a drive also and took 2 shots and fell down a ridge
5th deer was also shot on the FULL RUN ( nice 8 pointer) at about 30-40 yards.... 1 pellet right between the eyes... did a flip and never got up again
6th ( story above )
*** i have to say in the area we hunt where 100 yard shots are VERY rare and only at a couple stand.... Buckshot is the way to go... considering we do DRives without dogs all day
PICS !
