was it elk of red deer?... they show 4 different animals.... can you tell me what were they?...

Deer hunter

Mommabear, I think he's talking about "The Deerhunter" not the "Beerhunter";)

I saw the movie many years ago when it came out and was put off by the whole dhunting part.
If I remember correctly , while they were supposed to be hunting deer. It should elk, mule deer and whitetails above the alpine in PA. It also had the "hunter" shooting a left hand bolt in one scene and a right hand bolt in another . The two scenes were part of the same "shoot"

Next to the "Bad Lieutenant" with Harvey Keitel, this was probably the biggest waste of my time. Well except for that time at band camp.:dancingbanana:

I actually think they showed footage of a CARIBOU!! IIRC it had some pamation on it's antlers...

BUt it could have just been a Red Stag (none of which are open in Penn.):runaway:

It's been a long time since I saw the movie, but I recall wondering where those mountains came from.:dancingbanana:

There has been some criticism of details in the film, such as the hunting scenes supposedly taking place in the Alleghenies of Western Pennsylvania. While the native deer in Pennsylvania is the white-tailed deer, the characters are hunting Elk in the film. The rocky, mountainous terrain portrayed in the film is actually located in the Cascades mountain range in Washington state (Mount Shuksan can clearly be seen in the background of some of the hunting scenes). As these scenes in the film were a major theme (hence the title), the setting error is glaringly noticeable by residents and anyone who has been through the region.

deer hunter movie .

what caliber of rifle was robert deniro using .the rifle to me looks like a remington bdl deluxe.

De Niro uses the right hand to fire the revolver and the flame thrower.
Left hand to shoot his rifle.

The rilfe has always been a lefty one in the whole movie, except form a scene where you can see the rifle being right handed.

He also shoots the M16 with his left hand.

What's going on?

deniro is like myself and left eye dominant which is going on.... the one scene with a right hand bolt was a #### up.

I have hunted the mountains of PA. In Tioga County. They are actually very steep and high hills covered in hardwoods. Most deer are whitetail (they do have Elk and a season) average size is about 115 pounds. The movie left me cold as it wasn't a good huntin movie and it wasn't a good war movie either. Oh did I mention it was looooooooong?
just my two cents Darryl

Remember that she LIKED the movie - a film of anyone other than her hunting crew devouring all the beer probably would not be a good thing! ;)

Isn't that where you learned to play instruments to call in animals? No, wait, you use a remote to do that, don't you? :p

If that's the case, maybe it was a Fallow Deer (German = "Damhirsch")? They've got palmate antlers, but the rest of them are about the size of a whitetail I guess. Apparently there are a few spots around North America where they've been introduced or at least penned up. I hear they tame rather well.
