Deer Hunting and ATV's

I spend alot of time in the woods winter, spring and fall, and I can honestly tell you a walking man woman or child, will scare deer 100 times more than you driving a road with a ATV. There is also a huge sent trail advantage by traveling to your stand with a bike.

I used to get my old man to drop me off at a stand where my feet never hit the ground from the bike, and it made a huge difference.

Durring the deer camp gang hunt we bike to each watch and park the bikes at the watch. I have seen deer almost jump over the bike as it was a rock.

We do ok on our deer hunt!

I've talked to guys that said the same thing. Pick up and delivery, with no scent trail in and out.
Met one guy on a mountain bike for the same reason.

They said it worked for them.

Anything that is a change will change the way the deer behave. Sometimes. :D

If you can get them used to coming out for their apples, to the sound of the quad....:D

Cheers
Trev

I have seen many and elder that would not be in the woods hunting and enjoying the sport and passion they have without one! So i find alot of what you said hard to choke down Adrian... I no my grandfather wouldnt be hunting with me this year after battling cancer had it not been for and atv! And yes he shot a deer off it!

For this reason I don't have a problem with a person that needs this sort of help, aswell guys that drive an ATV to a watch, park and hunt, then return, keeping in mind the highest percentage hours in a day.

::::So i guess since you are hunting, the woods are all yours and we better curb our enjoyment because you dont like atv's. seems fair to me.
This is exsactly the attitude most ATV'ers have. They have a 365 day a year time to use them and have no respect for hunters with a very short period of time to enjoy their sport (like a week)

I share a hunting location with a head strung farmer that hunts the same property. I am 15 years older and I walk about 1/2 mile into a stand along a field that neither one of us owns but both have permission. I was in this area first and know that he also has permission to hunt the same land which is fine. He has to go right under one of my stands because he wants to hunt the other side of this property. I bow hunt every year while he is moose hunting and see deer under my stand near every night. He comes back and bow hunts the same place after the moose hunt and drives his ATV the same distance as I walk under my stand and parts down the field from me so he can walk 100yards to his stand and he healthly as a horse. As soon as this starts , that is the end of the deer coming to the field in day light hours and I have seen the same for 4 years incuding this season. The same outcome started back 8 years ago in Simcoe County forests when I hunted them and the ATV's and dirtbikes started to use the same tracks of land. They didn't give a hoot who was there using this land before they just plain took over. Starting to run at 8:30 am to dark all over the tracks and right past my stand sights.

Anyway I have asked this farmer nicely if he could park just before he gets to the field and walk like 400yards to his stand, but NO WAY , the lazy ass has to rune the hunting in this field because he owns this ATV and has no respect for others that use the same area.

I'm not out to start a war, I would only like to see some respect from these users as we as hunters do have the same rights to use the same land.

So move your stand to where his trail doesn't go right under it

Our camp owns 300 acres & hunts approx 1,000 of crown that is mostly only accessed thru our property. We encourage the ATVrs to use our property & crown land trails we make in order to have the deer used to the noise & it helps to keeps the trails from growing in. I have drove right by deer on the ATV & it seems the only time they are scared away is if they are right on the trail & your going directly toward them.

Sorry, But ATV's are ment for the work. Yes they do scare deer and moose. The most aggravating is the running of them and the guys that drive them don't seem to understand that they would see far more game off them then they do on them.

About 25 years back my father was riding his 3 wheeler when he spotted a big moose less then 30 yards from him in the timber. As long as he kept the engine running the moose just kept eating. He stepped off the trike and was able to fire at the Moose without him taking off.

I guess Someone forgot to tell that moose and his 50" rack that he should of been scared of the ATV....

If ATV's scare moose or deer why is it illegal to shot from them? Yes, sometimes ATV's may scare and sometimes they may help in whatever we or they are hunting. I listen to atv's running trails, tractors working the fields, traffic on roads, dump trucks in a pit, planes, jets, gun shots, open pit mines and one morning a domestic at a farm house, etc, etc. If noise scares animals they would all die from running to get away from the noise they hear?

If you want quiet wear ear plugs.

I'm on both sides of this and will give some "facts" from personal experience.
My tractors don't scare deer...neither do my atvs, but I use them regularly around the ranch and they are used to them for the most part.As has been said,as long as I'm not going right at them...no problem, and even then I can get pretty close.Oddly enough my Diesel trucks don't scare them but they run from the gas jobs...most road warriors must drive gas jobs :D
I believe that the reason that deer don't spook from atv's when they're used to them is because they hear them coming long before they get close and have a chance to identify the source ahead of time.

Adrian J-that fella is tryin to run you off...he's not lazy,he's selfish.

I just want everyone to know that its not that I hate ATV's , I just believe that some over do it.

I only wish out of all the places I hunt and all the game I have taken one of these ATV's would be around when I'm dragging a big game animal out. Funny There is never one to be heard then.

I only wish everyone could get along with and without them...

Not every ATV rider has the luxury of riding 365 days a year. Some actually have this little inconvenience called a JOB. We ride dirt bikes and buggies in Northern Sask. If we come across a guide baiting his stands, we ask where the stands are and stay away from them. When we see hunters in the area, we vacate that area. Do the ATV's scare wildlife, IMO, yes. When you "hunt" off your ATV, I assume you're not carying a loaded firearm, as that would be illegal.

I don't see anything wrong with using the ATV's to get to and from stands and for hauling out deer or moose....but if your going to use the ATV as part of a partial push/drive to move your quarry then it's not only wrong, but illegal.

Working your dog on birds while you ride the ATV behind it. Come on that's just ridiculous. Are you trying to separate yourself from a road hunter by having the dog out there. And I'm sure the gun is encased and you are just very quick getting it uncased, loaded and shooting all in the time your dog flushes a bird. This activity should not be mentioned with the word hunting in it at all.

so let me get this straight this guy was driving up and down the road on an ATV with a gun shooting birds?....its against the law to have a loaded gun on an ATV period and even more so if your shooting off it.....he put your whole group in a bad position if a c/o had of caught him they would have seached your whole camp and even if there were no charges its still a pain in the ass.....

actually i was using my atv mounted bmg. Give your heads a shake. I was driving to spots that i shot birds before. The dog was running beside me and yes i was telling to hunt it up as we were driving the trail. if he flushed a bird i kept my eye on it to see where it landed, got off the bike loaded my gun and shot it. Perfectly legal! Once we got to the bush i was hunting i got off the bike and loaded my gun and proceeded to push the bush for birds (hiking). and to the fellows that dont agree with my brand of hunting thats fine, you do your thing i'll do mine. the main point of this is if someone doesnt want road noise then they shouldnt set up beside the main road.:)

Isn't all this freedom great!!!!

If your on public land expect the public to be there. Dont expect them to be doing what your doing, your way.

If you want total control of what is happening pony up and buy your own property. Post it and then make your own rules.

I would hate to see what you guys would have been complaining about if a group of boyscouts came wander by and made camp.

Sheesh.

If your sitting on a main logging road and expecting peace and quiet your asking for trouble. Lets face it, most people are lazy, your going to get hunters driving around on ATVs, and trucks which is there right, since it's a free country. Simple solution is if you want peace and quiet is to go further into the bush and get off the trails. Problem solved.

I've had this problem where I hunt, a group of lazy asses set up a bunch of stands on a main logging road spreading out about 5miles. I pass them and go to the end of the 5mile long road where I park my ATV, or pickup and walk further back in the bush. They #####, curse me out, and cause problems every year because they're so upset I pass them. 2 years ago one of them let the air out of my ATV tires, fun thing to find when your walking out of the bush just before dark after a long day in the bush and your cold, hungry, and tired.. Paid them a visit at the cottage, they never did that one again

Deer are generally unafraid of ATV's. I have even seen them calmly walk around where people were running chainsaws!

On the other hand, break a twig while walking and they will take off like a Formula 1 race car... go figure!

That being said, I think it is extremely uncivil for someone to ride his ATV in an area where he "knows" hunters are installed. I ride ATV's, I hunt, I shoot. I try to ensure I don't infringe on anyone else's enjoyment of the outdoors. If I an not hunting and just riding my ATV and I come across hunters, then I get the hell out of the area ASAP.

Dogs are generally NOT ALLOWED in the woods during deer season at least ehre in Quebec. The fish & game guys won't ticket your ATV but they will ticket you for have a dog off leash in the woods during deer season.

Well I have no experience at a deer camp, but at our moose camp the rule has been laid down that ATVs are only used to get to your watch in the morning, and to get in at night, and to haul out an animal. Moose that we would drive past while getting into camp before season would usually not be alarmed by them, but after the first day of bullets flying they don't hang around to see what you are driving. An observation I found with our group, since everyone now has their own machine, was that when we had to walk to our watches, the guys that stayed closest to camp (read laziest) were the ones we had to clamp down on about running their machines all over the place and not staying put where they were supposed to.
