Deer Hunting: Headshots

I'll definitely be giving it a shot once the snow is gone. I likely won't have much range time before then. Given enough time and practice it is not difficult to get a steady shot off offhand. If you do it consistently getting good groups is not uncommon. Up until recently I never hunted whitetail from a blind/treestand/etc. All of it was spot and stalk. I don't think I have to tell anyone that it takes skill to get within 100 meters of a deer when you are moving and it is not. When you did get to that range you wanted your shots to count.

Out of curiosity. What kind of groups can you do offhand with your best rifle Ardent?

Do you guys realise how good, and how impossible, shooting off hand 2" groups with lever guns, SKSs, and muzzleloaders sounds to most of us quite familiar with shooting? :) 2" groups, bench rested, are in reality likely better than the average, let alone with these guns. Off hand you're making professionals with $10,000 rifles look bad if you're truly able to do that. Reference the "prove it" accuracy threads, most attempts come in at double the claims. If either of you guys can do this one video you will forever be remembered as some of the greatest shooters witnessed on the Internet. I bid you good luck, and rooting for you.

To be honest with myself, offhand / standing, to give a number I have a hope of producing on demand probably 6" at 100 yards, really trying. I shoot just one rifle most of the time as I like to hunt anywhere I travel with the same rifle, my .375 H&H RSM. Perhaps when my lightweight rifle is complete I can try with that and it may improve my scoring, I don't know. I only know that 2" and better off hand with lever guns, muzzle loaders, and SKSs is the stuff that puts shooters into the one in a million quality shooter category. A man that can stand up with one of those and punch out a 2" or better 100 yard group would be quite the marvel to me. I've yet to meet one, and know some seriously fine shots with some respectable shooting credits. Ever googled pics of targets from High Power Rifle Comps? Those are 200 yard for the standing, and you guys would be right in the running with them with far inferior equipment extrapolating your 100 yard claims.

Maybe someone should start a "I can shoot 2" all day, standing/offhand, with my rifle" thread.:D

You know,... that way some people can put their pictures where their mouth is. Or their foot......;)

I suppose I could make my viewpoint starkly clear stuckon308, and antiqueguy, you're claiming you can shoot almost perfect scores by DCRA rules, with far, far inferior equipment. If you can make 1.75" groups at 100 yards, that's 5 points every shot, just went through the rules. The only amount higher you can go is 5V with rounds in the 0.875" bull, which doubtless a few of the shots would be. stuckon308 you would win their black powder class by miles and who knows, perhaps set the all time record. Prove me wrong guys, please.

I'd sure enjoy that. I organized that milsurp rifle match, rested we couldn't do what these guys can with an SKS or muzzleloader off hand. :) Keeping the internet honest is a little like looking for love in a brothel though, I'm afraid.

Ardent thank you for telling it like it is and calling out the internet supermen. No sarcasm at all, I say this in all honesty.

If these guys are really that good then I agree they should do as you say and go and start dominating some competitions. I get the feeling though that they are too humble to come out from behind their keyboards and prove it.

Ardent, like some others on here, readily recognizes a horse turd on the road when he sees it
Likewise, easily recognized are claims that have absolutely no chance of being truthful.
I shoot a lot, with very accurate firearms, and when I get a 4" group offhand at 100 meters, I am ecstatic.

4" you can't do better? Haha I'd be happy just to hit the paper!!
As to the guy about mor properly bleeding out when you shoot them in the head, I hope you never eat beef.

I am NOT saying the SKS is a match grade gun at all...but throw on a peep sight, use some good ammo and shoot in a well supported position like kneeling and you may be surprised what you can hit.

Truthfully, most people would be lucky to consistently hit a 12 inch plate off hand at 100 yards. It takes a LOT more practice to be proficient at off hand shooting than other types of shooting. Anyone claiming they can shoot 2" groups off hand at 100 yards is an exceptional shot or really exceptional at embellishing on the truth!
I'm not saying its impossible but just exceptionally rare.

hawk-i, you hit it right on the button. Practice makes perfect. There is a reason why there are guys out there who consistently wound deer with gut shots and blow jaws off. If you can't shoot within 8" at 100 yards there is a big problem and I would suggest sitting in a blind and waiting for something within 20 yards. Where I grew up, if you couldn't hit within 4-6" you were definitely in the minority. I actually find it amusing that this seems to be an incredible feat.

He wasn't agreeing with you. :) Your continued claiming to be perhaps the best shooter in history, shooting to and perhaps beyond the maximum potential of the equipment you mention benchrest, yet shot offhand, may fool a few but won't fool any who do a lot of shooting. Why aren't you competing? You'd win every match with your shooting. You could even be a professional likely and get paid to shoot for a living at that quality of shooting. :) Please, last time; prove us wrong. I'll root for you.

It is rare enough he'd shoot perfect DCRA scores, that is indeed exceptionally rare. Beyond exceptional rare when done with a levergun or muzzle loader, and into pure impossibility.

Agreed...you should be able to hit a 2L bottle of pop 8 or 9 times outta 10 off hand @ 100 IMO. They are cheap and fun targets...either shoot with the the pop in it for a nice explosion, the el-cheapo stuff is $0.99 stuff or drink it if pop is your thing and fill them with water and bright food colouring, much easier to see.

Anybody who claims to being able to shoot 2 inch groups offhand at 100 yards consistently with an SKS is full of something. That something is not skill.

No disrespect meant to the SKS
