deer hunting preferance

I like hunting from a ground blind. I can't say its more of a challenge because huntine whitetail in any way is a challenge.

I've never hunted deer from a stand (mainly because I'd fall asleep and end up hanging from a poplar tree).

I sure would try a stand for a morning to compare the two, but for now.... my vote is ground blind.

Well I tried the tree stand thing and came to the conclusion if God wanted us to be in tree's he'd have still kept our tails attached when we evolved. :p

I have hunted deer from a tree stand with a bow, very challenging IMO.

I have never found the need to hunt deer from a tree stand or ground blind with a rifle, mostly because of the areas I hunt. I can sure see where blind hunting would be almost a must.

I myself do prefer spot and stalk hunting deer where I hunt.

ground.
Around here.. its best to track them and then hide out. Sitting in a tree all day would give me a very sore bum.
I like to be on the move. I see more animals by sneaking around to find them then letting them come to me.

I like spot and stalk hunting on the prairies because I see lots of deer and it's challenging to get close enough for a shot.

I have limited experience hunting deer....
I like sitting in the stand until I can't take it anymore than I go for a walk, have lunch, take a nap etc and go back to the stand for the evening.

If you know where the deer are likely to be, then my vote is for a tree stand.
The deer are less likely to smell or see you, which means you will see them first and you'll get a better shot.

There are always deer to be seen on the grasslands. I learned that to hunt these animals means using one of their advantages to your advantage. They can see you long before you see them. I found I'd drive the grid roads looking for deer in unoccupied stretches between farmyards. Grassy sloughs have always been productive. Then get out and walk (when not posted of course, and whereever possible ask for permission). Some of my best hunts have been in the fields beyond the one adjoining the road allowance. Two memorable hunts were nose into a driving wind and jump shooting deer that lifted in front of me like grouse.

Spot and stalk for this guy. I love hunting but I get very bored sitting in 1 spot all day. Here on the prairies the more ground you can cover and glass the better your chances of shooting a big guy.

On the ground, walking very slowly and/or stalking. I usually end up shooting more often with my camera than with my rifle. I love to hunt, but for me it’s more of an endless walk in the woods.

Just love the bush.

x2!!! In parts of Central and Eastern Ontario, as well as the Ottawa river region of both Quebec and Ontario, this is the best way to find the elusive Buck. I find that blind hunting is more of a "video game" and you shoot what comes across the 'screen'. I love getting out there, being at one with nature. I too take my camera but am usually too busy with two hands on my rifle to get photos :)

The only time I sat in a stand was spring bear last year. Talk about Jimmy legs!!! I just cannot stand the thought of something nice walking by my stand just out of range, so then I have to settle for whatever gives me a shot. If I know what I want, I will go get it.

My favorite part of the hunt is the stalk. (Well, after the trophy picture taking session)

We hunt in farm territory, where walking the bush means a 15 minute walk. So stalking is almost out of the question. We use tree stands. Mainly because the bush where i hunt has lots of rolling hills and the extra height gives you a view of the gullies. I have shot three deer out of the same tree stand in one day.
The other thing to consider is the number of hunters in an area. If you walk 15 minutes in any direction there is a good chance you will run across another hunter. My group likes to git in early and be in our treee stands way before sun up. we found that the "weekend" hunters on adjacent farms will push deer into our area when they come in latter. I think we have probably fill all our tags most years. The best one being 6 in one day.

You should always adapt your hunting method to the area your hunting. Excluding any approach might limit your success.

i divide my time between still hunting and sitting on the edge of a hayfield or clearcut or just sitting in a likely looking spot in the woods.

Either/or ... no clear preference. My favourite, on a drizzly day, is inside the "whack-shack" - early morning & late afternoon - overlooking some long field shooting adjacent to productive ridges.

You fella's that are saying that tree stands are uncomfortable have never sat in a new summit 360 climber. These things are mint and extremely easy to use. A fixed or hung treestand is one thing, but a really good climbing stand changes everything....your completely mobile and able to adjust for morning or evening or simply rotate around the tree to watch them come back in the morning after feeding and leave in the afternoon for the feilds. They are fantastic for the hardwoods
