Deer hunting rifle? Why don't I have one? Now I need one! OK, want one.

I have several rifles in the lock up but I think I need a real deer rifle. I used a M14s last year with peep sights but the 300+ deer were out of range for my crappy peep.

I am needing advice on caliber and model of rifle. Preferably off the rack (vs custom) and under $1000. I would consider looking for a used rifle as well.

I hunt primarily black powder (Savage 10ML2) but every few years I get called for a deer cull with rifle. The hunting scenario is some brush but mostly open ridges with deep open valleys. There are some spots where something light and quick is good, but due to the light hunting pressure, the deer don't spook. They usually just run 100m and stop to look at you. 300+ shots are available and taken, though usually 150m is the norm.

I would like a rifle that would allow shots out to 400m with enough energy to terminate a whitetail with good bullets. I reload so bullet selection is better. I am not a recoil junkie though I can tolerate it if necessary. It would also be beneficial if the rifle was under .280 so I could use it for coyotes in my home area, though not necessary.

I was looking at the .260 Remington. 6mm seems a bit small though it will kill deer. 6.5 seems to be the long range choice for accuracy junkies. Bullet selection is good. Brass is reasonably easy to obtain.

Remington is producing this caliber in the Model 7. Synthetic stock and Stainless barrel are available.

Is this a good choice or should I consider other options. Caliber or rifle model? This is new territory for me so feedback is appreciated.

To fit your criteria ... the .25-06, 6.5x55, .260 and .270 would all work, with appropriate 110, 120, 130 or 140 gr. bullets as are appropriate for each caliber. Nosler Ballistic Tips & Accubonds if you're hand-loading, although some really like the Barnes bullets.

The 6.5x55 & .260 will likely be the most pleasant to shoot, but the ..25-06 and .270 are still not heavy in terms of recoil.

A Sako 85 Hunter would likely be my first choice, but the
Remington 700 CDL, 700 Mountain, or 7 CDL & the various models of Tikka's would all be appropriate. For a scope, I would go with a Leupold VXII 2-7 with LR reticle or an equivalent Burris ... like the Fullfield II Ballistic Plex. Their LR reticles are a definite plus if you want to try 300 & 400 yard shooting.

25-06 is a great cartridge, plenty of range, light recoiling and very versatile. Most manufactures seem to build this caliber, Tikka, Ruger are available at P&D in Edmonton. FS

Fit is even more important then the cartridge that your rifle will be chambered in. Find a rifle that fits you in any of the above chamberings, and you will be happy!

Yep. I just picked up the Steven's model 200 in 300 win mag, and I love it. Incredibly accurate for a $329.99 gun. I know the 300 win mag is overkill on deer, but I was thinking of a few things besides deer when I bought it. One, it'll reach 500+ meters, still with pretty good accuracy. Two...moose and elk....enough said. Three, did I mention that they are pretty darned accurate. Even ME...yes,.....bi-focal wearing, shaky hands me, and I was shooting one inch groups at 100 meters with factory 180 grains. I hit the 500 meter gong once, the 400 meter one with regularity, and the 8 inch by about 20 inch plate at 200 meters presented NO problems at all.
I'll be trying for head shots on whitetails this weekend if anything comes up at less than 150m. Judging by what the thing did to several one gallon milk jugs filled with water at 100 meters, I'm guessing it'll make a hell of a mess of the side of of a deer.
One thing to note...no sights at all. You have to put a scope on it. Weaver bases were 4-5 bucks each X2.....rings were I think aroudn 25.....as for what scope you want on it....the sky's the limit. I put a Bushnell with and illuminated recticle on mine that I had off another rifle. The guys at WSS told me it would never survive on at 300 win mag. A couple of hundred rounds so far, and no problems at all.
