Deer Hunting with 50 BMG

Congratulations !! Nice kill !
Have several questions :
Where does the purchase line start ?
What is the waiting time for one ?
Take trades ?
Last but not least...How much ??
Cheers...Kevan

Shot was slightly uphill about 3 degrees I figure.
Yes I certainly came VERY close to a missing an inch lower and no deer.
Kevan It takes me almost 8 months to build 1, base price for gun alone is $5500.00 and by the time it is scoped and field ready approaching the $7000
mark. Range for shooting something however, is 1500 yards easy, more with practice and a REAL expensive range finder.
Scott the gun weighs 61 lbs a standing shot with this gun would require far too many rented muscles and steroids.

Cat after humpin a 61 lb gun around, yeah it is too heavy for the hills, thank god I don't do hills , just from the truck out a few hundred yards and sit and wait.
Gilly not even as much as 243, actually more like 410 shotgun, but noisier. The light weight rifles (30lb) are along the same as 300 win mag for recoil. Far easier to handle however, 61 lbs is great for bench but a tad insane for the field.
Okay, next question, where does the recoil go from such a mammoth cartridge? is it the shear wieght of the gun or are there some sort of supressors?

Gilly the only form of recoil suppression used other than sheer weight is the brake on the muzzle. Physics dictates that the heavier the rifle is, the less it will recoil. with all other variables remaining the same.
I have built several 50s all on the same action and stock configuration, all using the same brake , the only difference was overall weight, the lightest I have built weighed 21 lbs ( light laminated stock and lighter shorter barrel)and hit the shoulder like a 300 wby with no recoil suppression , the best for field use and recoil weighs 32 lbs,( laminated hardwood, heavier longer barrel than the 21lber) my partner now owns it. Recoil is more like 12 gauge magnum, but far easier to carry around.
The stock in my rifle is solid aluminum, with an 1/8 " thick covering of kevlar/epoxy for feel, my barrel is also 2.250" at the action as opposed to 1.750 of the others I build at the shank, my muzzle dia is 1.50" dia rather than the 1.250 of the others, all this adds up to alot more weight, and a lot less recoil on the shoulder. No magic to make the recoil disappear, just weight.

Thats it.I want a .50 cal !!!

Don't kid yourself...that's his plan.

Drag that baby around in the sled behind the snowmachine to clobber a few caribou.

Have you ever tried a standing snap shot w/ that bad boy?? :)

It can barely be held offhand. Maybe if you're built like Win94, but not me, even at 6'5 230. The barrel probably weighs 53 lbs itself.

The scope is a Nightforce, IIRC.

Since it's used Rick you gonna hook me up for a bargoon?

As soon as he builds up that beast based on the 30mm M242, the 50's are going to be passé. Anyone know where you can get a 3.5" barrel blank in 30mm?

Yup Nightforce 8x32x56 NXS but I am upgrading to the 12x42x56 NXS

My daughter says she is at least 2 steps up the chain on this 1, she loves the 50, can't lift it but figures its the best thing around for gophers. She need to get a job as her ammo seems to be all be coming from from my box

Should have heard Dan Lilja's response to my inquiry about the 30mm anti tank barrel I asked for, I picked up 500 rounds so figure to I may as well scale up the 50 cal action

He told you to do something very dirty to your hat, then called you a bad name, didn't he?

I don't remember you having a daughter...

So what kind of reach will you get with a 30mm rifle with say , a 40in barrel?Horizon-like range? :D I tought i was crazy for wanting a 20mm rifle HAHA

What impresses me the most is the fact that you downed the animal and Field Dressed it all in one shot lol :D Now THAT is what i call german efficiency!! I gotta get one of those.
