Where are all these fictional people who overblow what the Creedmoor rounds are capable of?

The comments in threads like these really get wild because canada is so vast and different in how and where and what we hunt.
The only long shots I get are across plowed fields for coyotes and crows. Theres no centerfire season for deer. The few remaining woodlots are small and scattered. 10 to 20 acres is a big treed woodland. My average shot on white tail deer archery and muzzleloader is about 10 yards. Last few years ive taken some nice bucks at 30 to 40 yards with a muzzleloader that increased my average
In my type of hunting area a 25/20 if legal would be fine. Most typical deer rifles would be drastically overkill.
Yet while ive never hunted the prairies im sure the average shot is much further meaning those typical deer rifles serve a much more important role. I've crawled across fields to sneak geese and turkey successfully. Not sure if deer and antelope would be as lacking in life choices to let me crawl within shotgun distance of them across a vast open area
Whether we take these things into consideration or not makes for interesting reading.
As for low power performance I once double tapped a bear carcass that was full of the fat and trimmings with a 9mm 115gr hp and both bullets blew thru breaking ribs in and out and buried in the sand on the off side from 20 yards or so. To me thats enough to cleanly harvest a deer but a 9mm carbine would not be my first choice for a deer rifle. Makes a great coyote rifle though

O I know, I’ve been on here for over 20years (2006). I enjoy shooting old cartridges and know what energy is needed in a less than ideal situation. In the depression dab shot an elk with a 22 highpower, an old guy I hunted with poached deer in 30s with a hornet. I’ve also seen many deer run to far after being hit with a “big game rifle” . We can’t stand a lost animal but the odds increase with sub calibers. It’s our job to kill clean and fast not “ look what I can do. AJ

You made me look and see how long I have been on this interesting and informative and sometimes not so.
But, 20 years is a long time and most of it here has been fun if not enabling

My grandfather figured the .25-20 was the best deer rifle going, and the .30-30 was much better suited for moose than deer.
However, he never shot a deer past 50 yards in his life, and he stopped hunting about 1950.
Really, I think it's about as effective as a bow, range-wise. I'd limit myself to 50 yards max and no quartering shots.

Our local Conservation Officers use a Savage Model 93 in 22 WMR to dispatch deer in town. Their complaint was over penetration of the bullet. (pass through)
At that time I was a dealer, so I sold them 22 Winchester Rimfire (WRF), ammunition instead. The 22 WRF ammo can be safely fired in a 22 WMR rifle....
They loved the 22 WRF ammo as it killed the deer dead, with no pass throughs. (45 grain jacketed hollow point bullet travelling at 1300 fps. It only has 169 foot pounds of kinetic energy) Yet kills deer easily.
As a Natural Resource Officer and as a land owner, I have dispatched several deer with a 22 WMR rifle. Worked 100% every time, with no issues. Shot placement, bullet composition is always the key.
A 25-20 centerfire rifle will obviously kill a deer with proper shot placement and a good bullet. However, I would only use it if I didn't have any other options........
