deer hunting with a shotgun?

I know an old guy who said he used to hunt exclusively with a shotgun. He had a pump and would have a slug in the chamber followed by buckshot. The idea was to attempt a rifle style kill with the slug, and then use the buckshot as backup for when the deer starts running.

Never did this myself, buy I know he took a lot of deer in his time.

In Southern Ontario you can ONLY use a shotgun due to population density. Buck shot is the norm - works fine up to 50-75 yards depending on choke (usually full). Slugs are ok to use as well. I've been deer hunting for 15 years and 90% of my deer were with OOObuck. Last year got a Doe at 110 yards, but I would not recommend that range.

In southern ontario you use a shotgun and also a muzzleloader in most wmu"s.
 
Shotgun hunting for deer

Using a shotgun is not my first choice of firearm to hunt deer with or any big game.
But in the Ottawa Valley there are specific borders for the WMU's where, rifle hunting stops and shotgun starts in specific WMU, then you even have the no firearms area's that are bow only WMU.

These area's are basically right on the edges of town in rural area's of the city. We call em City deer. They are not afraid of people and are more predictable than big timber deer. But still coutious enough to make it difficult to bag a big buck.

These area's for the most part will be all private, with some city property that will be thick with existing hunters if your clever enough to figure out where the city property is.

So ya hunting deer with a shottie not so unpopular where rifles are restricted.
If I had to use a shottie I would definately use a rifled slug barrell with a sabat or slug for my 500. Bought it just for those days I need it.

Most of the southern half of Ontario only has Shotgun or Bow seasons - no Rifle season for Deer. We've been dropping deer with shotguns for decades. 00 Buck or Slugs, depending on the range.

If I can get some info then I might be able to persuade the local authorities to consider the use muzzle laoders.

This is for Ontario WMU, so not sure how it will help you, and it allows the following

Rifles, Shotguns and Muzzle-loading guns only

It is rural residential, and it is the only Rifle area that I am aware of
