Deer Hunting WMU 47

OP - Do what your heart desires. However, as already mentioned, also bear in mind what Goat had mentioned. I hunt Upland in 47 as often as I can with a bit of Whitetail chase included and concur 100% with his feedback.

All trails/acccess points spanning 522 eastwards from 69 become dotted with hunt camps. Personally, my primary concern would be safety if I'm not part of an organized hunt group where folks are roughly aware of each other's positions.....the area fills up with blaze orange although one may not be visible quickly. Best of luck!

Just in case you change your mind on the back to nature thing and want to search out a hunt camp. The fall convention is in Orillia on Sept 14th 10am to 3pm at the Royal Canadian Legion 215 Mississauga St. East, Orillia. Would be an excellent place to meet some folks. Good luck and do keep us posted on the results of the adventure. At this point we have done all we can for you.

If you want to be one with nature plan a 3 day hunt then hit a hotel for a day or two. The actual hunting can suffer sometimes with the added challenges, been there done that. I am all for camping, love it, but I prefer to keep it out of November.

I will certainly take all of the advice into consideration, you have all been a great help. I know I can be stubborn and set in my ways, and believe me a mid November camping trip could prove to be quite miserable, the novelty may wear off in a few days. I am quite concerned with stepping on other hunters toes, especially since many have been hunting the area for quite a few years. I would like to hear more input if any one has any more advice.

Crowds thin down substantially in the last 2/3 days of the second week of Deer hunt in that area.....for someone hunting solo, this would be a good window to try.

To be honest mrgoat, im not really sure what other info I am looking for.

I've been target shooting the last few years(pellet gun) and within the last year and a half received my PAL. Initially it was just to up the FPS on the pellet guns, but the urge to upgrade to big boys tools became too great :) I took my hunting course late 2013(December) and here I am. Now I sit with a small game tag, and an entry in the deer draw.

I grew up in a family that had no interest in firearms, until I took the leap, now my two younger brothers are following behind me.
Like I had mentioned earlier I've been camping my entire life, so I'm not new to the out doors, but very new to the idea of hunting.

I'm not sure why my life story came out, but I feel that if you know a bit of the background it would help in guiding me in the right direction - any direction but one direction........groan that was a bad one ;)

What about a trip in early october before the moose hunt focusing on small game? Jumping directly to deer is a major step, let alone trying to camp at the same time in November. In this manner you can hunt and not have to worry about other hunters, get to know the lay of the land and get a feel for what camping that time of year is about. You will also get a feel for what hunting is about. Im not trying to scare you but i would be terrified trying to handle the gutting and skinning of a deer with no experience and no help from an experienced hunter.

That is a great idea Blasted_saber, I've been putting so much thought into the deer season, the idea of going for small game up there never occurred to me.

I cannot wait to get my hands messy, and be able to tell my kids - I put that on the table. Didn't come from the supermarket. I will have to skirt the truth with my daughter though, she is not a fan of me harvesting wildlife but love to punch holes in paper. I'm trying to coach my three year old son that this is where real food comes from. My daughter has seen Bambi too many times. :)

STR8-Shot, everybody has top start somewhere. And the suggestion of heading up in early October for small game is very wise as it will give you some idea of what's there and more importantly "what's not" there. Keep in mind the weather you encounter in October will differ greatly to what you get the first two weeks of November. Colder temps with rain and snow will be normal. A foot of snow is "not" unusual or an exaggeration in any way.
Forget all the crap you read in hunting magazines on deer hunting as the deer don't read the articles so don't know how you expect them to behave. You asked for advice and information, many of us have given you some very sound advice based on our years of experience, in my case 41 yrs. of it. You hear but you refuse to listen. The old analogy of you can lead the horse to water but you can't make drink is accurate in this instance.

...A slow walk would be my next step. Pick a gun you can shoulder quickly, and practice free hand shooting.

Not as easy as it sounds. Works very well in summer. Come hunting season, 10 inches of dried leaves on the ground has defeated me every time. I would love to learn from more experienced hunters how to do the slow walk in those conditions.

I'm not too sure where everyone is getting the idea that I'm not listening, I've been taking every bit of advice into consideration. I had certain ideas about how i want to hunt coming into this discussion, camping out being one of them. Everything that was mentioned regarding the concerns with that I HAVE listened to very carefully!

I will be looking into hunting camps in the future though. We will see how the first season goes first. :)

Experience and practice and lots of encounters with deer. I cant sit still on a watch so I always volunteer to do the walking at camp. I think its something of a misconception that deer run at the slightest sound; I see a ton of deer even while walking through the crunchy hardwoods.

You can expect to find good grouse and maybe the odd rabbit or two. If you bring a shotgun you might even be able to jump shoot a duck off of a pond (then you just have to figure out how to get it). You'll also be able to observe deer sign, and maybe even bump a deer while walking, giving you an idea of whats thats like for future reference.

Then of course you might just stumble across a bear (or it might stumble across your campsite). Buy a tag, you never know!

The more small game you can get the more you'll learn about various animals. Its worth "getting your hands dirty" on small stuff before trying to tackle a deer.

blasted-sabre probably has the knack of walking through the bush with the wind in his favor and the pace of his footsteps sound deer like. Deer make noise walking in the bush like everything else can't be helped.

Hahahahaha thats very true. The first deer I shot on one of my first hunting trips (and one of the few from a watch) I heard coming a LONG time before I saw him. He has just slowly walking and sounded exactly like a person to my untrained ears. In fact I actually was getting pissed because I thought someone was trespassing on our private property and was going to screw up my hunt.

Boy was I shocked when a nice buck materialized out of the brush in front of me

Just doing some review now that I have my doe tag in hand.

I want to take this time and thank everyone who has contributed to this thread, especially Blasted_Saber and MrGoat.

Good luck to everyone this season and hope we can fill our freezers.
