im think im gonna go for the .308 that is 6.5x55. im gonna try out some of my friends rifles first though.

I know that you mentioned "used" and a lot of people seem to offer the 30-30 as a good choice. I don't know your country, but I must agree with Supercub, ... what if a 300 yd opportunity was to present itself?

My suggestion is a Stevens 200 in 7mm-08. Very accurate, inexpensive, my daughter took her very first doe at 320 yards, bang, flop shot. For the close quarter shot, I suggest a low magnification scope like a 1.5-4 or 5 x 20mm, and it's still get you out to 300 yds when needed.

Well that is kind of confusing .308 and 6.5x55 are not the same.

And yea try out sombody else's first if you get chance. Start early because the season will be here before you know it
