East Coaster in need of some help identifying a deer.

I am going hunting in Saskatchewan this fall and my buddys friend (who is nice enough to let me come tag along) found this last year.

This is the only photo I have.

White-tail....or Mulie?

I have seen both before but have a hard time telling in this photo. Looks like a white-tail to me, but those back split tines really make me wonder....

Both of the rear tines split too though. Hard to tell in this photo but I can't figure out how to post it bigger.

Thats what got me, never seen a whitetail like that before. Either way it gets me excited.

Especially with what we are used to for a nice buck around here.

Very large whitetail. That fork at the rear on his left antler, one point is a non typical point. That will reduce his score, considerably.
Looks like some other non typical points on that antler also.

Rear tines occasionally split, could be a crossbreed also but the way the mainbeams are sweeping forward and straight with a lot of single tines coming up means whitetail.

Someone mentioned crossbreed, and yes, there are a lot of them around. I too, looked at the long brow tines and well formed main beams, indicating pure whitetail, with some non typical points.

We will be staying and hunting in zone 34 but I can't remember the name of the town.

Any body have any tips on hunting in that area at the end of november.

Any gear I should have that I may over look.

I am used to hunting from treestands in thick woods so this should be quite a change of pace.

Thanks,

Matt

You can't tell species by the antlers. The tail is a much more reliable means to identify the species.

end november might be trickey, they are done the rut so the bucks will be exhausted and laying low. You are going to have to find them and they won't be moving much.

Having hunted in Saskatchewan for many years,I disagree, the rut often continues into early December.

The Canadian Resident season for that zone is only open from November 24th to 30th.

So we have one week to hunt. We are also going a few days early to get a little bit of scouting in before hand.

If bucks are still rutting at this time, that should increase our odds a bit.

I might have to invest in a better pair of binoculars before making the trip too.
