One person is dead following a two-vehicle collision involving a deer northwest of the city this morning, Ontario Provincial Police say.
Emergency crews were called to Highway 10, just north of 20th Sideroad, in Mono where the driver of one of the vehicles was pronounced dead at the scene just before 7 a.m., Const. Julia McCuaig said.

The driver of the other vehicle was treated at the scene for minor injuries, McCuaig said.

"They’re still investigating how the deer’s involved."

No information has been released about the deceased.

Highway 10 between Shelburne and Orangeville is expected to remain closed for several hours as investigators examine the scene, she said.

Very Sad... one life lost is too many! and our auto insurance will continue to escalate as these accidents increase.
Phone the Ministry and ask what they are doing about longer seasons to keep the deer numbers in check. All these extra tags are worth #### if the deer are not harvested...

Here is an update. Talk about bad stinkin' luck.

A man was killed after a deer struck by another vehicle was was thrown into his Jeep on a highway northwest of the city this morning, Ontario Provincial Police say.
A southbound vehicle struck the animal, throwing it across the road into a northbound car, Const. Julia McCuaig said.

Emergency crews responding to the scene on Highway 10, just north of 20th Sideroad, in Mono pronounced the driver of the northbound Jeep dead at the scene just before 7 a.m., McCuaig said. His age and name haven't been released.

The male driver of the other vehicle was treated at the scene for minor injuries, she said.

"Car and deer collisions do happen and drivers have to be very alert because the deer do come out on the roadway and they do not move. Deer become hypnotized by your headlights," said McCuaig, who has struck a deer before.

"I tried to avoid and the more I tried to avoid, it seemed, the more it followed me," she said.

While deer usually wander onto the road in the spring, "when the bug season starts," and in the fall during mating season, there was one day last week McCuaig reported "maybe half a dozen" car versus deer collisions, she said.

Highway 10 between Shelburne and Orangeville was closed until about 10:30 a.m. as investigators examined the scene.

All these extra tags are worth s**t if the deer are not harvested...

.............very true Redd. Hunter mentality needs to change. We have the ability to buy a doe supplement license here which includes two tags and in turns allows you to harvest two does in various areas. From what i saw this year, people are not interested in meat deer though.

My Little Cousin's girlfriend's dad (try saying that 5 times fast) was killed 4-5 years ago by a deer... Similar situation... He was a long haul driver driving a rig, and the Deer actually hit a minivan in the opposite lane, and the deer was kicked up into on coming traffic and through the front window of the rig killing him instantly...

Yeah that is pretty tough to say 5 times fast.Back to the story.Proper deer management (or any animal) is critical to protect peoples well being.I remember reading a story about a county in the U.S. that closed deer hunting for about five years because of it being immoral. They had to reopen the season because of the drastic increase in deaths due to car/deer collisions.I think the place was called God's county.

I believe deer are the number one man-killing animal in north america if you can believe it.

I read a report done in the states about north america, and more than all other animals combined, deer kill and injure people in canada and the US by the highest margin. They also cause billions in damages.

Food for thought.

I read an article a year ago, New York has the highest deer/car accidents in North America.

When driving south to Myrtle Beach to play golf, I would be surprised to see fewer than 6 dead deer on the side of the road each way.
