deer loads in 458wm

Yup...when I bought my .458 Mag, it was with the intension of having a " repeater" & with enough case space to have a useful BP cartridge (basically a 45-90/45-100 class). I did some experimenting with it and it did shoot adequately ( 2" at 100) but for some reason I never hunted the gun with BP. I ended up selling it to finance a "real" SS Highwall 45-90 that as of yet hasn't killed anything in modern times...yet.

I load 300gr TSX and cheaper 300gr jacketed HP Hornady bullets at 2650 fps MV in my .458 Lott, which has a bit more case capacity than the .458WM, with a nearly full charge of IMR4895. Impact points at 100 yards are nearly identical.

The 300gr Hornady should be a good deer bullet, except at close range where it will blow up on impact, out to 250 yards before it drops too much.

I have experienced hang fires with reduced powder charges. Using Dacron as a filler above the powder to keep the powder charge against the primer sometimes helps. The fuller the case with powder the better.
