What are your thoughts on 'culling' deer just because their antlers don't look like the ones in the big book? I just watched a show where Wadell was on a Texas ranch and they shot every buck that didn't look like the ones in the magazines. In my (narrow minded) opinion, all of them were trophies and certainly worthy of living their lives. I just saw it as a waste they be killed because of a piece of bone on their head. Or am I alone here?

I'm sure it was legal but I found it a bit sad that these people want all deer to look the same while anything with any charactor was killed so it couldn't pass on it's genes. I considered any of their 'junk' bucks, (their words, not mine) true trophies.
To produce good deer this system works, and they are doing it in a pretty controlled environment, most likely a ranch, in Texas.
It's the same reason you don't see 180 class mule deer running around every corner here. Because everyone shoots good genetics two or three years to young.

On those big " Texas deer/game management ranches" it comes down to $$$ and greed.
You want to shoot one big $ high-point deer that may take you a few days to find & pattern or 4 or 5 management bucks ( "culls" ) in two days for the same money, to film your crappy TV show ?
It's still canned hunting, no matter how it's sliced.

Canned hunting has nothing to do with the principal of managing deer.

A private twenty, thirty thousand acres, whatever, semi permanent tower blinds, deer being bred/fed and habitat managed for antler size, on a pay-as-you-go and for-what-and-how-many-you shoot ... all sounds pretty contrived (or canned) to me !

thy have so many deer thy can chose whayt deer thy want to do the breeding .farmers cull or casterat animals thy donot want to breed .some of these farms just have to many deer so thy love to let the deer that have the most to offer live to a mature age .but thy still love to hunt .better to shot a seven pointer then a small ten point that could grow in to a big ten DUTCH
And you can manage deer in the same manner under almost any circumstance, canned or not. What the heck do you think you buy tags for. Why do they put point restrictions on game? Why does a ram have to meet horn length requirements? In short, GAME MANAGEMENT!
When I hunt I cull deer every year. I shoot dry does, old bucks with poor antlers, or bucks that I don't think will ever be great breaders (spikes). I have lots of big sets of antlers from years ago, I would sooner have a good eating deer than a rut rampant buck. That what it's all about, some like horns others not so much.

No argument vis-a-vis what constitutes "management" per se.
My point was in reference to the original post.
On the big-screen on those Texas ranches, "management" is directed
to "trophy" antler growth ... for monetery return. It is very much
pay as you play.
Want a few deer to shoot for your TV program ? You save money
and gain more footage by shooting some "culls" or management
deer. Hunting ... naw ...just get in the blind and wait. All you got
to do is show up and take the shot ! ( and with a little luck, none of
the imported species will show up on screen so you have to edit them
out ! )
And no, I'm not opposed to it ... just not for me !
im glad when a small buck with no brow tines or only 2 points on each side are taken from our spots. Glad they are killed when they are young and hopefully havnt pasted their genes on. The bucks with good mass, good tine length arent necessary passed on, but if I seen two 1.5 year old bucks, one with no brow tines and the other supporting a real nice rack for his age, I'd shoot the no brow tine one just to let the other grow up and pass his genes on.
