Deer rifle for youth

7mm-08, 6.5x55, or if you can locate one, a 7x57, all good calibers.
Even a 308win would be a good choice if you reload or purchase the
reduced loads.

I agree. I consider a 243 more of a experts rifle. It will do the job but you have to be real careful with shot placement.
 
Whatever you decide don't get a rifle with a lot of recoil. Years ago my dad started me out on a 30-06 when I was like 11 or 12 y.o. It took me a long time to get rid of flinching because of being shy of the recoil. I'd start him on a 243 but not a light weight model.
 
I started my older son 17 years ago when he was 10 with a single shot T/C Contender carbine in 30-30...

When we would go hunting he would walk with the action open once the action is closed he had to #### it.

By far the safest rifle chambered in one of the best deer cartridges that I could have gotten for him...
