just a little reminder about these little things. the property i hunt is right beside murphys point provincial park, 10min from perth ontario. this place is litterally crawling with deer ticks. every single deer ive shot in the past 3 years has been infested with them. if i had pics of the buck i shot last fall you would puke. they were literally gorged and falling off it it. when pushing the bush i pull 10-12 off my pant legs every time. my dog also whos with me all the time gets them and my most recent trip last weekend i pulled 10 off my pants, aswell as one off my dog. pics included. how many of you actually have this problem?

keep in mind these are a known cause of lyme disease. although not all of them carry lime disease, they are in fact carriers.

Interesting.

I have a camp in the Hwy 69/French River area, spend a lot of time there, and I've yet to find a tick. The other camp owners have never complained about a tick problem with their dogs either.

That being said, I recall a good article in Ontario Out of Doors, a year or so ago, and they highlighted a guy who got Lyme Disease in the Parry Sound area. Weird.

When I lived in South Saskatchewan this could be a problem in the warmer months.
Seems some years were worse than others, they liked to hang out on low lying brush on the prairie river banks and catch a ride on passing mammals. Mantioba in the lower parts has this issue too and I think it's a little worse there. East Selkirk/Patricia Beach seemed bad enough. It was a hot day in the spring and near East Selkirk I was varmint hunting with two buddies and we were beating a thick briar of blackberry bushes. When the wind came up I thought I heard raindrops falling on us. Turns out it was the happy ticks falling on us! The wild boar knew where they were safe from most hunters.

They're here in Elgin County, but nothing like what you're talking about and certainly not at this time of year.
Within the next few weeks or into May as the temps increase I'll start looking for them on Casey. He'll sometimes pick up one or two or sometimes none. I can't remember the last time I had one on my pants.
Creapy, ugly fookers. They give me the willies.

All over where our cottage is from now until early July if the heat comes. A good repellant seems to work on keeping them off.

When I lived in N. India, during the wet season it was leeches in the grass. I much prefer the ticks......

Only ever had them crawling on me in saskatchewan in the summer, but man are they ugly little suckers. Not to mention tough to kill! (I recommend .338 and up)

There is a repellant used for horses that is supposed to work really well, and not wash out of clothing??? I'd love to get that stuff. Anyone have a name/source?

I wear upland pants that have tick liners that with elasticized ankles under the pant legs. Some of the fields ive been in are crawling with wood ticks. No thanks.

I think you're referring to wood ticks, we have piles of them mid May until mid-end June. They're quite a bit larger and brown. They seem to like dry places, old wood and grass. Fortunately, they don't carry Lyme's disease.
We are starting to see some deer ticks here(MB), but not nearly as many.

All this tick talk always gets me freaked out, but I guess its because I know little about them. I have yet to see any where I hunt, but I do know guys in the same region who say they see lots of them. I did not realize they are already a problem this early.
Usually if I hit the bush in the summer I just spray my pant legs with Ben's, it has 98.11 % deet, and I have yet to get bit that I know of. I think its time to read up on these nasty critters.

Our local vet. has warned me of positive test results from ticks off of dogs who were walked at our local provicial park (Presquile, near Brighton Ontario). I've become far more cautious, especially after seeing a CBC news story showing a man who had contracted Lyme disease. It severely affects humans if not detected early.

ya they definately give me the creeps. theres just so many of them. im not too worried as i check myself for days afterwards but still. when you go to murphys point provincial park, they give you a handout warning you of them. when these little bastards latch onto your pants, try getting them off! even pulling out of the dog is a chore! they really are in there and u can litterally hear a snap when they come out. every single time ive taken them off my dog he gets sick soon after. this is even all the while using advantage flea and tick meds. nasty critters. im not too big of a fan of coating myself in chemicals to rid myself of ticks. being aware and checking yourself for days after is more important.

I hunt a propety on the Big Rideau....it's lousy with them every year. My dog gets drops that seem to work very well and you can get a treatment for your clothes that is an excellent repellent. I forget what it's called though
