What is the best defence load for a 12 guauge shotgun ?
I'm hesitation befween the 00 buck and numer 1 loads.
In fact anything from number 1 to 000 buck sounds reasonable.
Do you guys have any relevant info on this topic ?

2 leged or 4 leged
For 2 Leged
2 3/4" nickel plated low recoil LEO 00 buck
works really well and missed pellets dont hit as hard or go as far.

IMO, if you can get it, 000 buck, in one of the LE loadings. You still get 8 pellets, the same as many 'Tactical' 00 buck loads, but it's a bigger pellet. Federal still makes this load, catalogued as LE132-000. If you can't find that, a close second would be any of the big name maker's LE 00 buck loads.

If it's bigger critters you're thinking about, I'd recommend Brenneke slugs.

The nice part is the case quantity price is low enough to really practice with them.:dancingbanana:

My 2 870's feed this ammo better than the PITA steel rimmed cheepo trap/skeet loads, and it barely kicks harder.

Hey man, I'm not looking for props on this one. When decent ammo cost $1 per shot, it's hard to swallow a 100 round training session. When you can bring that down by half, it's a bit easier to take.

You know me. A gun nut who shops like a Mennonite, cheap and planning for the hereafter.:D

What distance are you thinking of for use???
Out doors or in house???
The shotgun is a vary versatile, and at the same time, limited weapon.

This is a good point. If your looking for defense from a bear on a camping trip, then maybe the 000 buck, or better yet a slug would be best. If its for in the house, forget the big shot, or you may have some go right thru a wall, and hit an innocent person (kid, wife, neighbor). Close range with #9 shot as suggested, will stop anybody, crackhead or otherwise, with less risk to others.

Nobody in the right mind would suggest birdshot as a legit self defense round. If you want to create a flesh wound and not stop an attacker, by all means, go ahead. Read any self defense minded articles or books and they will all recommend 00Buck or something similiar. Birdshot will get you killed. Heavy winter clothing will defeat it, penetration is very limited, it is simply a ludacris idea to use birdshot in any kind of self defense situation.

#9 shot? Ugh.. that gives me shivers. I can only imagine how aggrevating getting sprayed with that tiny crap would be. Talk about something that would completely enrage an assailant.

I was talking to a friend who is an agent in the S.S., right now in Iraq. He suggested a 'slinky load'. If you reload, wind stainless safety wire around a pencil and then coil the wire into a shotshell. He recommended this against two legged predators. No adverse penetration of walls and he said afterward the predator will get a new job. Don't know how legal this is but sounds interesting. He said at 10' it will grow to the size of a basketball. :D

Ripstop, what agency does your friend work for???

If SS is Secret Service, other than escort duty for the executive branch members visiting Iraq, what would the Treasury Department be doing there?

Yes, the secret service. He was crippled and sent off to to an office job, electronic monitoring of frauds e.t.c. over the internet and other mediums. He's damn good at his job and was needed overseas.

And here I was wondering if he was stuck in a warehouse examining all of Saddam's billions, looking for counterfeit.
