Defender pump retracts when fired

Hello gun nuts,
I have a Winchester Model 1300 Defender. When it is fired, the pump recoils to the reload position so you just need to push it forward. Is this normal or do I need to find a gunsmith to look at it?

Normal I believe. My SXP does the same and while I don't have a 1300, as far as I know they're basically the same.

That's why it is called the "speed pump", perfectly normal operation.

There is a YouTube video where a guy demonstrates this shooting an SXP with one hand. Didn't know they did that either until I saw the video.

Had a really old Mossberg 500 that did same, gunsmith said as long as it dosen't unlock without bring fired it was fine.

It’s by design. Ride the pump back and slam it forward and you’re on target like a semi auto. It’s helping you not waste time like some people who shoot and then take their time cycling the next one.

On a related note, some shotguns will not open if you pull back too hard on the pump while firing, like the 500, 870, M37, Mod 12, Mod 31, Novas…
The alloy receiver winchesters are designed to not do that, also the BPS and some Weatherby based designs from Turkey.

It is absolutely is normal. Its marketed as the "speed pump" system. Makes it super quick and slick. SOme of the smoothest pumps ever.
