Hello. Not sure if this has been posted anywhere or hashed out before but I don't have time to read through all the posts sorry.

Looking for a defense style 12 ga. I don't care if its a pump or semi auto but it must be magazine fed. I know there's a few out there but the ones I've seen have been very expensive. It doesn't need to stand up to thousands of training rounds but does need to work.

Thanks for any advice!

Actually, I don't think it has ever been discussed on here before..

Dominion Arms Grizzly Mag seems to fit the bill.

I think if your goal is a defense shotgun, you'd be looking at a pump with a standard tube magazine.

I'm not sure anyone has gotten a grizzly working 100% reliably with detachable box magazines.

Once you decide on that, the Winchester PDX ammo has gotten some pretty decent reviews.

Valtro PM5 if you want box magazine reliability.

With 2 spare mags you have 21 rounds on you, takes 3 seconds to reload.

What are you defending against?
bears?
zombies?
mirror commandos?
unicorns?
people?

the main problem with box mag shotguns is the inability/difficulty to top up your ammo capacity while the mag is in the gun. Watch, read, listen to anyone talk about using a defensive shotgun, this is within the first three points they touch on (keeping ammo IN your gun, to keep YOU in the fight)

yes, mag changes are easy, but mags are expensive and heavy, and have a tendency to hangup on clothing etc.

further more, some have had great luck with the grizzly line of shotguns, others not so much.
I fall into the second catagory.
The mags need modification to prevent the follower from jamming the last spent shell.

I have not used a valtro - this could be a good option, but they are expensive and can be tricky to find.

another point - the grizzly shotguns only hold 5 rounds - six with a mod to the mags.
where as a 18.5 inch 870 can hold 8 rounds of 2 3/4.

the only time a mag fed has the advantage is in a short barreled platform, where tube length is reduced.

Its all ninja speculation really. If its for home defense you likely wont use more than 1 or 2 shells.

If its zombies, Id rather have box mags on me.

Maybe in the states, but up here, where we gota keep everything locked up and unloaded, I'd say a mag fed has another advantage. The ability to quickly load your shotgun.

Slap a box in and you're ready to rock, no fumbling shells in the dark, while the adrenaline is kicking in.

I wouldn't. box mags get dropped, dinged, and can render your shotgun useless if lost.

another point is how long it takes to actually load the mags themselves properly.

but that's just all b.s ZED/ MN/MC talk.

I'll give you that point. yes.

but just one little thing:
unless the grizz mag is modified, a full mag will be hard to seat in the shotgun while the slide is closed. I had trouble with mine anyways.

OP - the big thing is to try them both and see what works and what doesn't, then decide. Your "scenario"/what you are looking for is fairly vague. you know better than us.

But if you don't have time to read through the other threads...

How about using a speed loader then? I don't even have a shotgun but they looked pretty neat watching the videos in 3-gun.

With a bit of practice you can reload a tube mag or chamber load fairly quickly.

IMO if you need rounds onboard faster than what individual reloading can give you, you're better off with something other than a shotgun anyway.

Bingo,

That's what I'm thinking! Dark, asleep, etc. It's just a club if you can't find the shells. At least the mag is big bulky and everything is in one container. Find it and your good to go. Have tube fed shotguns not needing any others thanks.

just go to a gun show and get on old stevens pump gun for $150 and cut the barrel down. you can get all kinds of deals on the EE or a local gun show. i had tons of tactical shot guns but i got rid of them all and now all i have is an old ithaca 37 i payed $300 for and had cut down. its as good for defence as anything else.

In mho reliability beats coolness anyday and in a defense situation
you will definitely want to hear boom when the trigger is pulled

Maverick 88 meat and potatoes and boom everytime for a great price and compatible with all the 500 gadgets if you wanna dress it up afterwards slowly
