deformed cartridges

I've got a buddy with an antique side by side shotgun. He doesn't know how old as it was handed down to him by a neighbour, who got it from his dad. He does know it was made for black powder cartridges and he knows that modern cartridges come out deformed. He's only shot it once or twice.
Does anyone know anyone who makes black powder shotgun cartridges in the southern Ontario region?
Also, does anyone know why the cartridges might be coming out deformed?

Your buddy needs to have the shotgun looked at by a smithy before he get himself or somebody else severely hurt. It may and quite likely does, have Damascus barrels that aren't safe to shoot with any ammo. Certainly not modern ammo.
"...who makes black powder shotgun cartridges..." Nobody. Most guys who have BP shotguns that are safe to shoot, load their own ammo.
"...why the cartridges might be coming out deformed..." It's not the correct ammo.

1. Damascuss guns are as safe to shoot today as they ever were assuming that they are in good condition and are loaded with proper black powder rounds or a correct substitute.

2. I believe black powder shotshells are available from Kent (Gamebore). Ellwood epps used to stock them. Also, they have low pressure smokeless ammo available specifically for antique and damascus guns.

It would be a good idea to have the gun inspected by a gunsmith familiar with antiques, who understands damascus guns......
