Degreasing the M14 with simple green?

So I found some simple green in a squirt bottle at Cambodian Tire. Now, when my M14 comes, how do I clean the gun with this?

Do I dilute it with a certain volume of hot water (boiling maybe?) and then soak the entire action and barrel? Or just squirt it down and let it sit and work it's magic then wipe it down and repeat?

Is it safe to spray down the bore with? Is there even cosmo IN the bore? Or would boiling water be better?

Parkerizing is rust resistant right? So since we are using water with the simple green possibly, as long as we wipe it down dry and oil it it will be fine right? Are there any parts on the gun that cannot come into contact with water?

Are there any NO-NO's when it comes to cleaning this thing that us newbs should know about?

May sound like a LOT of stupid questions, but for someone who has never cleaned a rifle and is scared ####less of wrecking their dream gun, I think they are valid....lol :D ;)

I would appreciate any input you guys have to offer!! Thanks!!!!

Well, it was designed as a military rifle, so it should do okay with soap and water without dissolving on you! ;)

That said, as you mentioned, make sure you get it as dry as possible afterwards, and do apply some sort of oil or triple action presertive to the steel - I have been disappointed with Norinco's rust-resistance on one of their 1911's, and I would hate for you to suffer the shame of surface rust!

For the bore, I'd just stick with a regular solvent, rather than the simple green. You can probably dilute the simple green from "neat" strength - check the label to see what it recommends.

Have fun!

I sprayed mine with an aerosol gun cleaner (I can't remember what brand), then washed it and wiped it with boiling water. Wiped it dry and set it in front of a fan to make sure it was dry throughout. Once it was dry I wiped it with CPL and put grease on the appropriate parts.

My flash suppressor it prone to rusting to I have to be vigilant there.

The piston is very prone to rusting too, be sure it is dry before putting it back in the gas assy.

I used easy off BAM!! to clean mine, the foaming one in a violet bottle, works like a charm and is cheap.

I use Simple Green to clean my BBQ racks.
Works like a hot damn.
Spray the SG on full strength, diluting or heating should not be necessary.
I would rinse the SG residue off with boiling water afterwards
and then oil liberally (In a conservative manner-of course!)
