I do not own one of these guns, but I would start with a box of the cheapest box of factory ammo.
For example Power-Shok Rifle 30-30 Win 150 Grain Part # 3030A...
Just because x-brand works for Jim and he pays $120 a box thus it must be the best ammo available.
Readily available and value for dollar are key points.
I'm sure others will have a different opinion and that is a good thing, just dont overthink the choices , you'll spend less time enjoying the gun and the hunt.

As FLHTCUI says, no real way to tell. You can take two identical rifles with consecutive serial numbers, and they can each like different ammo. The other question is - what are your expectations for accuracy? Open sights or optics? Chances are that without developing a hand load for your specific rifle, the best you’ll normally get is about 2” at 100. So if you find a load that’s doing that, there’s no use wasting money trying to find one that’s going to shoot 1/2” groups. Just my personal opinion/experience.
I am looking to get 2" at 100 yards with optic. The question really is: is 170 grain bullet will stabilize in 1:12 twist rate (which my barrel is), or I better off with 150 grain bullet in 1:12 twist rate?
Answer to FLHTCUI : I am in GTA ontario area and all 30-30 ammo is sold out in the stores. It is not like go to the store and choose. I already forgot these days.

Most Winchester 94’s in 30-30 also have in 1:12 twist rate, and stabilize 150 and 170 grain bullets just fine. So are as far as function goes, there should be no issues. As far as accuracy goes, as mentioned, you will have to shoot in order to find out, particularly with factory ammo. There really is no practical difference between the two, and as in the other thread, the nod would go towards the 170’s.

Those handie rifles can be quite accurate if special attention is paid to certain things. Like forearm attachment ect. Always make sure the locking lug is dry. If lubed it will crack open under recoil. If you hand load you can use SP bullets instead of RN/FP but choose your bullet carefully as most 30 cal bulleys are designed to expand at a higher impact velocity than you will often achieve with the 30-30. I have personally seen two of the H&R 30-30s hold moa with decent loads and my own H&R in 22-250 bull barrel is a sub moa rifle. I just wish they had ejectors not extractors....there is a mod to fix that...i just havent done it yet

Just to clarify for you - the twist rate seems to be related to bullet LENGTH, but for many brands that also changes with the bullet weight - so heavier bullets tend to be longer. But twist is about "length" of the bullet - is examples here - like 6.5 mm 130 grain target bullets - with boat tail and long skinny hollow point - they are MUCH longer than 160 grain, flat base 6.5 mm round nose. Is common to read people mention bullet weight in relation to twist rate - not likely to find that in twist formulas, except as a function of velocity - most bigger chamberings tend to throw heavier bullets faster than other smaller chamberings - so for some big cartridges, might be able to use slower twist rate than for some small cartridges, using same length bullet.

It tends to favor the 150g bullets.
I have a 3x leupold m8 on it. Shoots 1.5moa
But I have noticed when it gets warm the groups open up considerably.
Good for 3 shots then it’s opens up.
But for a single shot hunting rifle at its price point. I’m very happy.
I do want to have it reamed to a 30-30AI tho. Got the dies and brass already

I have a weaver base on my H&R it’s curved for the top of the barrel.

For your single shot rifle I would stick to the 150g with the 12 twist
But they do say each rifle likes something different
you could also try some of the 165g weight class
What might be one of your limitations is how the chamber is cut for seated bullet shape
Stay away from the VLD bullets as the twist/ velocity combination will not work
