Who sells them? How hard it will be to install it myself? I know that Mossberg has some tactical models with strap forend but I do not want to limit myself to those models/make.

The same purpose everything else you guys put on these guns does "looks cool?"

Hey, for me it is FUNCTIONAL - not JUST cool!

I am set on 12ga tactical pump shotgun and will buy it as soon as I get my license. However, every shotgun I fired so far, even with adjusted LOP, the recoil rips the forend from my hand. A few days ago I shot Mossberg 500 SPX with the strap on it. The gun stayed where it should be and I did not have any problem.

So, any suggestions on the forend strap or nobody knows about such thing?

ps. I am not a guy and my perception of "cool" is way different

how hard would it be to sttach a simple strap to your sling swivel?- i use one from an old walkie-talkie that has a split ring- if you can thread a set of keys onto a ring, you can do a strap- i use mine on my rifles to get a surer grip on the forend, so it won't slip, esp in the sitting position

How it will work on pump? Sling swivel will not move with the forend or am I wrong? Could you please post some pictures of your set up?

we have different interpetations - i DON'T want mine to move- remember. i said RIFLE- it's actually on a savage 99-however, with a pump, got to be a problem with your GRIP= most of us have NO problem with the shotgun"ripping" out of our hands-or possibly change to a VERTICAL foregrip - the first thing i'd do is go shooting with friends or someone at the "club' and have them CRITIZE my technique-a second set of eyes can go a long way-

Not saying you should or shouldn't get a strap, that is completely up to you but if the recoil is ripping the forend from your hand, I would suggest you take a closer look at your technique. This should never be an issue.

Thank you, t-star and bill c68! It is a good idea to find somebody to check my technique. This was my first thought when this happened but the range officer said I do everything right... May be I need a second opinion.

it just plain SHOULDN'T do that- there are THOUSANDS of shotguns out there and if it was common, they'd ALL have straps or vertical forends- as for the range officer. he's responsible for the SAFETY of the range, and his knowledge is an UNKNOWN quantity, unless his name is nattrass or something like that- what you really need is a SHOTGUN COACH or somebody that shoots trap and skeep WITH A PUMP- or drop out to a t/s club and watch them, and LEARN BY DOING as well as observation- i'm a rifleman myself, and i can;t hit worth a darn with a shotgun, but it certainly DOES NOT " RIP OUT OF MY HANDS"-if you find you still want a strap, if you get a vertical foregrip, you can attach it on the bottom of that- all it takes is a sling swivel stud and sling swivel- that way you can dismount it if you don't want it

coldblood,

The forend rips out of your hand because you do not know how to shoot it properly. Spend some time shooting cheap 7½ bird shot and then work your way up to buck shot and then slugs. You'll be fine without a forend strap - none of us use them ;)

Also, if you are a person of smaller stature, you may want to consider moving to a 20 gauge shotgun instead of a 12. Smaller round, less felt recoil but still a fairly effective round for most purposes short of migratory bird hunting... Just a thought.

Great suggestions, guys! Thank you. :)

ETA: I looked into 20ga and did some research. The ammo and shotgun models availability is way limited to my taste (fabarm does not have 20ga in the model I like ;)). Although I've never tried shooting one in 20ga, I've read some articles where people (pro's) said that because 20ga is lighter, the recoil is actually harder on 20ga than 12ga. But I wouldn't know until I try, right? So, I hope I could find 20ga to try and to compare. :)

personally, i'd go to lighter loads( trap and skeet or target) loads BEFORE i went to a 20- ammo is a LOT harder to come by, and when you upgrade to the 12, you end up with "an orphan that nobody wants"- that's what happened to me when i tried to sell my 870 in 20-i darned near gave the thing away

To each, his own so no worries. :) BUT, the comment about 20 ga. having more felt recoil than a 12 ga. is pure baloney. I have had 10 and 11 year old kids shooting my 20 ga. 870 without problems. I wouldn't let any kid that small anywhere near one of my 12 ga. guns...

Depending on where you live, there is lots of ammo available for 20 ga. slugs, buckshot right up to 000, all birdshots and everything in between.

I'm not sure where T-Star lives, but out here 20 ga. guns sell pretty quick, new or used. They are very popular for upland birds. Probably the most common gauge for upland, I would say. And a very popular gun to buy for wives and kids to shoot. Maybe they sell better towards hunting season? Not sure what to say, when I sold my 870 Youth model 20 ga. in the EE last year it sold in less than 3 days...

But all of that being said, if you are looking to put together a tactical shotgun, there is a lot more out there for 12 ga. guns than there ever will be for 20 ga. But then again.... you can buy a 20 Ga. 870 with an 18.5 " barrel and buy a Hogue overmold stock set and you will have a fairly tactical looking 20. ga... ;)

actually, i'm about 30 miles north of you- like you, i'm just relating what happened to me- and i sold the thing through the okotoks armoury, if you go back that far-claimed he couldn't sell it b/c it was a full choke "ladies" gun- but by that time i had the 1100, and didn't care how much i got for it

Howdy Neighbour! :) That does go back a ways! Before my time in Okotoks, I'm afraid.

Wow, you guys are way south! Or else I would beg you to show me how properly to shoot shotgun, lol!

Thanks again!
