Mine is still cheaper the a stoch sr22 with all the trimings you see here

it looks like you have cut slots in all the screws that hold the side plates on. those little Allan heads are a royal pain in the butt.

let's put it this way. at the shop i work at, we've got a waiting list of 8 people wanting to buy a SR22. it took us 2 weeks to sell the one 597 VTR we had.

i've handled both and will buy the SR22 over the 597 any day

Lets put it this way, the shop I worked at could hardly keep Chevy Cobalts in stock, but we had a new vette in the showroom for months.

Just because the lemmings are lining up for something doesn't make it better.

:nest:

these threads will never die

but ill put in my vote for the VTR...i have handled and SHOT both and i own the remington

Check guide rods and keep it clean and it feeds better than any 10/22 ive used with high cap mags...rapid fire...waxed bulk ammo...doesnt matter it eats it all

Accuracy is better out of the VTR too....we ran 5 or 6 different brands of ammo through both guns and the VTR did better everytime.

I looks similar but shoots/functions better...and is cheaper

no brainer...im keeping my VTR

** Disclaimer : gopher in pic was obviously not shot with a .22LR, rather a .223rem **

Oh dear L*rd, that's futuristic-looking!

There might not be a lot of money into it, but it looks like you put a lot of thought into choosing components - very nicely done!

I took my time reading through all the posts about getting a 597 VTR or SR 22, I finally ordered my VTR at a sponsor dealer today. Also ordered some after market parts from rimfiresports to make it work smoother. I have a 10/22 and it is not the most accurate rifle and that's what I read about the SR22, so that made me decide for the VTR.

The whole thing really did not cost a lot and was easy to do. All I have left to do is paint it. First you have to unscrew the hand guard and the ring. Yes it is tight! Next I ground down Part of the mounting block to allow the rail to slip over. Since I’m not going to war I used an Airsoft Vltor knock-off which can be found here. w w w.waridiot.org/index_eproduct_view.php?products_id=58 . Don’t let the cheap price fool you its really solid. Last year they sold it for 10 $ less. They are not fast and their communication suck’s but it was worth the wait. The front sight is an ARMS knock off which was milled out to 13/16 of an inch by a friend and just slipped on and tightened up quite well with the provided bolts. I used a real A2 bird cage just threaded the stock barrel and used lock tight. The rear stock cane from Questar and I sold the A2 stock and the buffer tube and almost broke even. The rear sight is from Questar also and is made by UTG. The scope is a ACOG knock of and really is clear and holds zero quiet well.

Email me if you want more info

Thank you so much for sharing. Really appreciate it.

Who sells VTRs? I see only SR22s for sale (when they are available :)) on the sponsors websites.

Edit (25/05/2010): Well, just ordered my VTR :)

waiting....tick tock tick tock..... :)

I have both the VTR and the SR and in my opinion the VTR is by far the better gun its a tack driver but it does not like cheap ammo (walmart bulk packs) the best ammo for me is winchester target standard velocity. SR is ok I guess but Ruger puts a stupid block inside the forgrip that rest on the barrel so anytime you put preasure on it, it changes your point of impact and the forgrip flex moves all over due to it being so long so dont know if it benifits to take it out. SR looks better but accuracy is more important. I was disapointed with Rugers SR-22 you put a bipod on it and point of impact is all over the place 5" goup at fifty yards looks good but dont waste your money! Have all but good things to say about Rugers 10/22's with the target barrel with laminated stalks very accurate.

I prefer my SR to my VTR..............got sick of the thing jamming with all kinds of ammo.....took the tension off the recoil springs no help.

Not sure how the VTR works now.........threw it in anger in the field.....maybe it will shoot fine now!!
