If you're now looking for an "all in one" rifle, then my vote would go to the 6.5x55mm Swedish Mauser cartridge, but nothing wrong with .308 either. (Sounds like you're having plenty of fun just being conflicted. :D )

Oh, you evil! :D

ETA: does 6.5x55 mm comes as a commercial hunting ammo (HP/SP)? ;) I think this one is FMJ is it not? :)

Yes, you can get soft point (SP) hunting ammunition for the 6.5x55. Typically 140 grains. It might be a little harder to find than .308, depending on where you are, but not impossibly so. (There are a large number of bullet options for reloading). And, of course, the cartridge is a ballistic dream.

I will check the modern rifles and the 6.5x55 ammo availability as well to compare with .308 ammo and rifles and then will make my final decision regarding the model/make. But at least I have my choices narrowed down significantly.

Thank you guys so much! You advice is priceless. :bigHug:

Well, so the only question left is that - could I achieve all the preditor control and to enjoy good precision rifle in one (.308) firearm? If the answer is yes, I am going to the bank tonight and will set a "rifle" saving account, lol!

sure, i'd say 90% of the time i end up grabbing the 300wsm instead of the 223

and the 223 works pretty darn well.

the 300 will literally take the head off of a coyote so pelts aren't salvageable

Ok, guys, I know, I am a very very weak woman. I could not work yesterday thinking of this Saco baby in .243 that I saw the other day in WSS. I fought hard the desire to take a half day vacation just to go there and hold it again in my hands... I barely made it till the end of the work day and drove to WSS. Once I took the rifle in my hands I knew I will not let go.... So, long story short, I brought a new baby home yesterday. Saco A7 RH in .243 with Burris 3-9x Fullfield II scope, Harris bipod and a new recoil pad! She is sooo beautiful! Now I need to work overtime to cover the cost, lol!
A couple of words of shopping experience in WSS (west Edmonton location):
I hate gun stores. Period. Yesterday I changed my mind about that all the guys behind the gun couter are either jerks or don't know what they are talking about. I had amazing time buying my rifle. People were helpful, and I learned a couple of new things as well which is a nice bonus.

ps I still didn't give up my dream to get .308 rifle. It will just take longer until I can afford it. :)

Whats a saco??? heh

don't worry, this wont be your first rifle. This is just the beginning of a long and loving addiction to firearms and hunting. You caught the bug

Welcome aboard :D:dancingbanana:R:d:

very nice, i hear they're shooters. i was the same way about my x-bolt except i looked at it it didn't leave my hands..

i'm not sure on bi pods for coyotes in the winter. i had one on my 223 and with the deep snow it's hard to maneuver to where the coyote is coming from (never mind the fact that it scratched my gun:mad:). i've been thinking about a bog pod, if you're going to be calling for coyotes that would be what i would recommend checking out.

a 308 is a nice size for anyone. low recoil, short action, accurate, common, and versatile... my wife shoots my old browning blr in 308 and she's tiny.

let me know how you like the burris scope. i want to replace my 3200 because i hate the optics.

I have several... :D

Single shot T/C Contender carbine in 204 Ruger & 223

Older Ruger M77 tang safety in 22-250

Sako 85 Grey Wolf in 22-250

Robinson Arms XCR-L in 223 & 6.8spc will most likely be selling the 223 conversion kit though due to the 6.8spc fast becoming a favorite with 95gr TTSX loaded to 2825fps this will take deer & bear as well.

Made in Germany Voere long action in 6mm-284 this is fast becoming my go to coyote/wolf combo due to the reach/accuracy/velocity of my 70gr Ballistic Tip loads

Cold - consider an M14. The Norincos are a great price, and you can trick it out / customize as you go. I love the .308 cartridge, plus it is semi auto. Nice to have that quick follow up shot without having to take your eye off the optic.

Look for posts from Hungry or Savage - they are M14 deity and can help you tune your rifle into a piece of surgical excellence.

My new coyote rifle,is a Sako 85 Varmint Stainless Laminate in .223.I am installing a VX3 4.5-14x40AO with CDS to replace the VXII 4-12x40AO now residing on the rifle. The rifle consistently puts five 50gr v-max bullets inside of 1/2" at 100 yards.

Semi-auto? For .308? Are you kidding me? :kickInTheNuts:
.308 is sacred and as such should be a bolt action rifle. Period! :nest:

:p:p:p

.308 (to me) is a great utility round. Easy to find, and ballistics that make sense. The 'best' gun is the one you use well. A semi auto 308 is an awesome tool - and fiercely accurate. Keep in mind, that the 308 is also know as 7.62 x 51 in the military world - military applications are typically based on rapid fire capability.

Once again, check out 'Hungry' and the competitions he wins with his bang stick.

Anywho, there are a seemingly endless variety of calibers and firearm manufacturers so that there's a happy place for everyone. Glad you found one you like.

I hope I didn't offend you with my previous post! In my mind the .308 I imagine is a long range precision rifle that I dream to have if cards fall right and I find long range shooting club locally. That's why I was joking about "bolt action. period" kinda thing. ;)
I will check "Hungry" threads. Thank you! :)
