HK SL-8, Swiss Arms PE90 (classic green, etc), Robinson Armament XCR, Robinson Armament M96, Tavor, CZ 858, Valmet M78, Armalite AR180, could even use a Ruger mini-14.

You can use pretty much any rifle you want.

Just get a good load bearing system, chest rig, pouches, etc and a good supply of mags and ammo. May want a good optic too.

LE No.4 series, (hey, the Cdn Ranger Patrol Groups use them at SR matches)
Mauser 98K, better yet, Israeli .308 fun! :D
M1 Garand of course!
Shot my groundhog M700 .223 bolt guns in the past! Shot my M70 .22-250 DBM over 10 years ago at a SR match. Even shot a Rem Police M700 once, that was a pile of fun. Back in 1994, I was stupid enough to bring a .223 M70 Hvy Varmint with a Bushnell Buckhorn to a SR match and I rocked the deliberate, snaps and 7 rounds on the rapids with it. :)

All great fun!

Awww, I love HK SL-8! If not for a cost, I would own one today! I also plan to pimp my SKS - to change stock and stuff. I am going to pick up my Russian beauty tomorrow from Canada post (yay!). Have two crates of ammo and itch to shoot all of them at once, lol! :)

Well, it seems like I will have to go to the service rifle match in Spruce Grove next weekend just to check what rifles people shoot there. This will be also my first time watching a service rifle match. I hope I like it "in person" because after reading stickies here it sounds like a lot of fun that combines guns with fitness.

Realistically, only Swiss Arms, XCR and TAVOR could be useful - and perhaps M14 at great disadvantage (just for carrying 11 steel 7.62 mags and changing mags 4 times in one stage). SKS and CZ858 will be getting hammered in the accuracy department at mid range. How fast can you load the rifle with stripper clips? Seriously, if I have to do with a SKS, I might as well use one of those uber ugly Beretta storm rifle.

THere are stages where you will have to kneel for million years......I cannot imagine doing it with a M14 or SKS - M1 Garand? Forget it.

Actually, you want to buy a rifle that can use the LAR 10 round mags for the new CFSAC style match. That pretty much eliminates swiss arms as well.

In effect XCR, TAVOR, FN2000 and maybe AR18 and that ugly Beretta storm rifle. ( or ACR?? haha)

Other then being a mag whore, 5/30 rounders aren't that bad for the matches, you just reload more often. Reloads cut down on shooting time but we got plenty to do the stages.

It is the 10 rounds in 3 exposures that hurts when running 5 round mags. If you don't fire four on the first exposure you are all screwed up for the next 6 rounds. It can be done but you need to be on your game and thinking ahead.

THe easier solution is to use the LAR 10 rounders. I know the P-mags are cool but......I don't really care about how cool you look!

So, all those rifles will accept LAR mags? Questar sells them in .223/5.56nato. Is this a caliber most of the people use? Do you know if this ammo comes in hunting rounds or FMJ?
Also, I liked shooting Beretta storm. This would be a prefect fit for me weight and price wise. If I buy it in 9mm - also cheap ammo to practice. But than again, Beretta storm is restricted. I heard that people convert Beretta to non-restricted by changing the barrel. May be I am wrong. But I would rather buy a rifle that already comes in non-restricted status. So, I guess, summarizing all the information, if I want 10 round mags, .223 caliber and non-restricted, and the one that does not cost 3000$, it leaves me with XCR. I've never held one so I don't know if it's heavy or if it will fit me.

A Beretta Storm in 9mm could be used for CQB (Close Quarter Battle) matches, these being under 100y or m. It would be a terrible choice for Service Rifle, where shooting is from 500 or 400 on down, depending on the course of fire.
For non-restricted, there are .223 rifles that are competitive. The M-14 can certainly be used, although it presents more challenges than one of the .223s. SKS, VZ? Of course you could shoot one in Service Rifle. For the heck of it, or if one was all you had....
As far as ammunition goes, factory ammunition is available with hardpoint, softpoint and match grade bullets, in a wide variety of weights. The heavier bullets (68-77gr) do have an advantage at the longer ranges, 55s will do at shorter.
The overwhelming choice for SR competition is an AR based rifle. Tried, proven and effective.

Well, like I mentioned in my previous post, it narrows down my choices significantly.

I need a rifle that:

1. Non-restricted AR based rifle.
2. Takes LAR 10 rounds mags
3. Shoots .223 (I need relatively cheap ammo. I also am limited to the commercial ammo at this point and not looking for reloading at least till next year when I hope to know better :) In addition, I need ammo available in hunting rounds).
4. Accurate at long ranges.
5. Relatively light weight and has the OAL that does not exceed my own height measurement. In case of M14/M1/SKS - it's almost as tall and weights as much as myself, lol. :)
6. Around 1000$ or so.

And the winer is?

About the only one that even comes close is a used AR-180B.
And you will have to install an optic.
SR matches require the better part of 300rds for a day.
And you have to practice. A lot.

Ok, guys, just off the phone with Wolverine (thank you, Ryan! Nice talking to you!).
I asked the same question there and the choices are:
H&K SL8 with mag well adapter to accept LAR mags or XCR in .223. The cost is double for what I budgeted. From the two - I like the XCR better. So, I know what I want for Christmas (hopely, on my birthday which is in September - hey, DH, hint hint ;)), so I better will start saving, lol! :)
I will let you all know if I liked the match itself after next weekend (June 27).

Thank you everybody for your help! :)
XOXO
