I would try heading west towards the Edson area or just northeat of Whitecourt...not too far from Edmonton....hunt the crown land for the elk and whiteails....I dont know if mulies are on a draw tag in that area...check the regs...if tag only by draw, then you are SOL!! There are zones where you can buy a general mulie tag. Buy a black bear tag too boot.

Have fun !!

Is your son in edmonton a resident of the province? and did he apply for and recieve a hunter host license? If not you wont be hunting big game in alberta this year unless you go thru a guide.

I think your SOL for mullies as pretty much all WMUs are draws, unless like previously mentioned, you want to go through an outfitter.

first week of october a lot of areas are still open on general tags for archery.

the op didnt mention if they were rifle or bow hunting?

either way if the son hasnt completed the hunter host process they are SOL for this year.

need more info sandy!

try east of redwater, alot of oil company owned land, just talk to the head operator in redwater and he can give you written premission to hunt on the lands, Open season White tail

look in the regs....there are lots of zones open to a general tag with archery tackle from sept 1st to oct 31.

Maybe there is...I'm not too familiar with zones further south.

I know you can hunt with archery equipment thru rifle season, but if you do hunt during rifle season with a bow, you must have a draw tag if that WMU is draw only....for example WMU 527 - you can buy a General Mulie buck, hunt during the Archery Season (Aug.25-Sept.16) Once rifle season starts (Sept.17), Draw Only tag valid in this WMU. If you bought a general mulie tag you must then hunt in "GENERAL TAG" zones only, aka WMU 520 or where ever the WMU that has a Mulie General Season....you can still hunt wth a bow if you choose.

no there is....im not gonna flip through the regs and list them as there is lots.

most of the zones that open on aug 25(yours) open for rifle early on sept 17. But a lot of zones dont open for archery till sept 1st or 6th and those usually dont have a rifle season till nov 1st.

you northern guys are just spoiled!! ;)

Non resident needs a guide or hunter host. Mulies are on a draw. To get a draw NR applies with a resident.

If the some has a hunting license he can act as a hunter host, Non resident ALIENS need to apply before an August deadline. NR Canadians can go into a F/W office and get the hunter host.
I know of no over the counter mule tags. Whitetail are available.

There are whitetails behind every tree, mulie draws in some areas are still under-subscribed, and elk tags you can get a hunter/host, but don't waste your money if you don't know where they are or don't have experienced hunters with the area for a proper push. If you don't know the herds, you will only find the escape routes.

All the animals are in southern Alberta where the weather is warm and hospitable. Nothing much to hunt up north, thats why the season looks longer:rolleyes:

Look at the alberta big game regs map, it will show you which wmu's are open for general mule and moose (it will be north and east I bet). A call to fish and game should tell you where extra tags are available, and you should be good to go. - dan

There are no longer any "general moose" areas. All rifle tags are on draw.

Sandyamac, a lot of people misunderstand the regulations here in AB. There are some open areas that you can use a "general mule deer" license in, but they are all either up north, or in the mountains (for the most part). If your son has not hunted here yet, then I am guessing that he is not intimately familiar with the regulations. If you figure out what management unit you are likely to be hunting in, please post it and we can help you figure out what is open.

Do you know the general area you will hunt? Is it north, south, mountain, prairie, east, west, etc.....

Between Grande Cache and Grande Prairie there is open mule buck and white tail started already... Bull Elk I believe is open there as well. Google "Alberta wmu map" should pull up specific are numbers. Lots of crown land and dirt roads to get you there. Good Luck!
