Possibly a Dunkirk capture?

I do remember reading (some years ago) that Germany armed some of its French Occupation troops with captured arms so that Heer-standard rifles could be used on the Eastern Front.

Germany DID use captured French war materiel, so it's not impossible that they used British-captured arms and ammo as well.

I had wondered about Dunkirk as well, would have been early enough that the No.4 wasn't in widespread use plus the fact that the Expeditionary Force left almost everything behind on the beaches.

I'm always weary of seeing markings like that as you may recall the M44 Mosin that was posted back on the Milsurp board and the arguments that brought along as to whether it was genuine or not.

Well hopefully this thread won't descend into endless bickering, the internet can sure bring out the best in people (cough). I just thought it was curious and people might want to share what they have.

Always a possibility. They aren't the waffenamt's we're all used to seeing on German weapon's, but they are identical to the stamps that are on the stock of a Luftwaffe Mauser 98k I have.

I believe that was the problem. Someone got their hands on the wrong/right stamp. Basically they used genuine stamps in the wrong manner. Apparently a dead giveaway. Some Mauser dudes will be along shortly to sort us out!

Looks quite shallow to me. All stamps like these that I've seen have been deep, with thick lines.
Beautiful rifle tho. Nice work.
