don't worry it is fine.

All 71/84 Mausers have the bore diameter stamped on the barrel shank, 11mm and smaller.
11mm happens to be .433 calber.

Any one on this sight have a Mauser model K 71 Cavalry Carbine or the longer K 71. Would like to know what the barrel inside dia. is. I have the Cavalry carbine & I slug the barrel & it is .439''. I would say that the .446 bullet is to big for this Mauser 71. I have the 43 Mauser brass I see that most 71/84 Mauser us a .446 bullet. I'm getting set up to cast some .446 bullets but looks like they mite be to big to use in my 71 ???. Any info would help.

At .446, I think you would need to swage them to .433 or so.

.439 dia. in a model 71 sounds a little strange to me. I 've had experience with half a dozen or so of them, and all measured .451 to.452 in the grooves as opposed to the .446 of the 71/84. A diameter of .439 would almost make me think of .43 Spanish. Interesting ,playing with these old things...hope you figure it out. Oh,...I don't suppose someone might have grafted a different barrel onto it at some point in it's life?

I have 2 old military cartridges for the .43 mauser. both are pp , and measure .440 over the patch at the mouth of the case. Some old dominion rounds with lead bullets mike.443 at the same spot. My understanding ,and I'm no expert, is that the soft lead bullets were kept a bit undersized to aid in loading in black powder fouled barrels/chambers. and the soft lead would "bump up" when fired to take the full bore diameter.

I have a Kavalry Karabiner. I slugged my barrel. 0.4515" My research indicates the 71s in general are in the 0.451" range while the 71/84s are generally in the 0.446" range.

I have 2 M71 Mauser's and a few M71/84's and one of my M71's has a .454 barrel and the other a .458 barrel, neither appear worn and my guess is that is what they left the factory as. One is Austrian made (Steyr) and the other German (Spandau).

Most of my M71/84's barrels range between .443 and .447
