I've found the Vihta Vouri reloading manual to be on the slow side of the predictions... I'm using the 155gr Scenar with N-150 powder, loaded at 45.7gr (which is basically case capacity at my seating depth, perhaps even a tad compressed) -- which according to Lapua should be firing around ~2660fps. In reality I'm actually getting ~2900fps.

As for the same weight bullet getting faster speeds with less powder, it's either a bullet length/compression thing or simply a mis-print. But I'm sure others will chime in with their opinions as well.

Your best bet is always to check your load with a chronograph.

In my Nemesis those ogives are top performer, the best i tried for that rifle, they are part of my pet load for any distance... JP.

The 155 performs best at around 3000 fps. My load for 155.5 Berger is 47.2 Varget for 3026 with SD of 10. I find all reloading manuals to be quite conservative. Work up till you see pressure signs to find the right load for your rifle.

The statement 3000fps is best for 155s is a little misleading, although it could be considerd as reference, i.e. 2800 fps is too slow . The bullet in question is the GB491 Lapua. We have seen them perform "best" at velocities from 2890-3100 fps. Best grouping and lowest SD are dependent on the particular load and rifle.
Handloading is about determining which load is best for your rifle and we assume longrange target application, the intended use of this bullet. N150 was used by the last Canadian Palma team and is popular with the Lapua, Berger and Sierra 155s. N140 is also very poular in .308 Win, as N150 may be a little slow for some rifles, perhaps with shorter chambers.

Peter

Maynard, "I run 155 Lapua bullets at 2940" and I'm sure this is what works best in your rifle. Actually, have seen 2940 very often for 155s. Maybe it's a harmonic thiing with many 30" TR barrels?

Regards,

Peter

Mr. Dobson is correct - I should have said the 155's run best in my rifle at about 3000 fps. I think whenever one is reloading one must consider that loads specified for one rifle may not work so well in another. For example, I have a Coyote and a Defiance both with 24" 1:10 barrels and one may well think that they like the same 175 SMK load; alas, no :)

Tomochon, thanks, I was going to PM you as sometimes minor differences in explaining things can be taken personally and you have posted much useful information, especially on optics.

Peter

"155 Scenar + R-15 + BR-2 + Nosler (Norma) cases @ 2.835 = 2810 fps @ 300 metres = .3 ... JP. "
hahaha.....
and to the op, as peterdobson has pointed out, find out what works in your rifle and stick with it... basically run it as fast as you can accurately without pressure signs using a stiff load of varget, h4895 or some imr8208 xbr

Personally I dont get the best accuracy running the 155 lapua's at the higher velocities I have tried and my rifle simply doesnt like them so I backed off to 2760 fps and its shooting bug holes at 200 meter consistantly.

In my Nemesis those Lapua 155 stellar grouping is at 2830fps with a SD of 4 or less and a ES of 10 or less... Using 46.1 gr of R-15, BR-2 and Norma case @ 2.830 OAL, this load is my most accurate, in perfect conditions, it will shoot .25 -.3 MOA @ 300 metres... JP.

Excellent shooting - hope to see you complete Underthegun's challenges soon. With those results you will have me beat that's for sure.

It is a sub half moa rifle out of the backpack with commercial ammo, i am an older man, in the third part of is life, this rifle in the hand of a world class shooter and the best tailored ammo... Wow... JP.

I too am older and not a World Class shooter but I am thinking I have to try one of those rifles.
