BigUglyMan the funny part is I had no idea the bear was that big. I didn't bother to judge whether or not he was a "shooter". To me, if he's breeding sows in that country, where we were, then he's gotta be a big boar and that's all I thought.
You know an amazing number of coincidences occurred leading up to this hunt.
First thing, outta the blue my wife got her driver's license back. For 3 years I have been the chauffer of this family. We did not expect it. So Friday our family was supposed to all go to Edmonton and then I got a call to work O.T.
My initial reaction was, "No I can't do it" And then I realized that maybe the wife was okay if I worked the O.T. She said, "Okay". That's the number one thing that set this all up.
I worked that O.T. shift Friday night and when I came Saturday morning I was going to load up a bunch of bullets... for bear hunting... which caused my brain to think... "Instead of loading bullets for bear hunting, why not forgo that and just go out after the damn things with what I got!?"
I figured, "Wife's gone, I got 2 days..."
And then not 5 minutes later she phoned from Edmonton and I informed her of my plans and she said, "Go ahead..."
I planned on sleeping in the bush Saturday night if I couldn't get a bear, so I threw some stuff together and went and bought 2 bear tags. I was going come Hell or High Water but on the way I saw that Republic of Alberta was home and so I called him up. Well that man is just a phone call away from hunting anything in season...
So he agreed to come... and then he took me into that spot where I found the bear... I would not have gone in there otherwise...
Now the last important conincidence is simply that we missed out on a bear when we were hunting together Saturday so Republic of Alberta had to go home and I stayed alone in the bush overnight and had my rendevous with destiny. If ROA had stayed in there with me, there's no way things would have happened just as they did.
It's funny when we were hunting together Saturday we kept seeing bear sign and we knew we were in good country and I kept saying, "All we need now is a little luck..."
