My mini 14 is rough on brass. I always leaves a dent in the case. Is this brass now junk? I have been saving it because I was going to reload for a bolt action 223 but am I wasting time searching for my brass???

Generally speaking dents are acceptable, creases are cause for concern.

Many years ago I've reloaded brass fired in a Mini-14.

Are they at the case mouth or in the case side's. For case mouth dents, get a taperd punch and GENTELY tap the punch into the case to get most of the dent out(leave a little bit of the dent so you dont stretch the brass),the sizeing die will return it to proper spec. For sidewall dents, lube and full length resize slowly. Next fireing re remove any(normaly) trace of dent. I have recovered caseing that were near crushed flat and still got 4-5 reloads before they split.

Get a new rifle.
I personally don't like the mini-14, the one I had was terrible. I sold it after a couple months of 6-8 inch groups at 100yds.
They are very hard on brass because they are extremely overgassed. If you really like the rifle then I would invest in an adjustable gas block for it. Mine cycled so hard it would throw brass 30 feet and made the same dents in the side that you describe. On the positive side though, because they are overgassed they cycle anything and are reliable. I always felt like it was eventually going to hammer itself to death.
Aside from reducing the gas system pressure to slow down the bolt velocity there won't be much for options. I tried a recoil buffer and all it did was prevent the bolt from locking back reliably.

Thanks for the info. My mini 14 shoots good. Minute of coyote. I wanted the brass more for a bolt action 223. I just buy Federal by the case (1000 rounds) for the mini 14.
