I am new to the sport, and have fired a .38 calibre dual action revolver - I find this isn't powerful enough for my liking - does anyone have experience with this Desert Eagle 5.0 firearm and is it good for target practice? When I enter a sport I always like to "go big or go home", so I figure the Desert Eagle is the way to go. Comments welcome.

I'll assume you mean .50 ?? As in 50 cal ??
D.E.'s are all about looking like a big, bada$$, gangsta cannon. Kinda dumb, if you ask me. I've never heard anyone say they bought one for " target shooting ".

Why not go for a large caliber revolver ? Like a 44 Mag or something.

Yeah, it's a movie gun for sure. I'd get one for my collection if I had lots of extra cash to waste but that's about it.

I have 1. I have it for 1 reason just bragging rights. If you want to spend $48.00 plus tax on 20 bullets then go ahead and use it for target practice. For $48 bucks I get over 100 rounds of 9mm. The gun is fun to shoot, but not practical at all.

You don't have to hold off on the DE..you can just get it in .44 mag..like I did :D. I did not get it to become a great marksman with it. I got it because it is a lot of fun to bring out to the range.

A .44 revolver can be made to kick far past most people's tolerances with stiff handloads. Leaps and bounds more practical than a DE. Especially the .50 AE DE. I would even recommend the SW .500 over the DE, I see .500 ammo with some regularity in gunshops.

500's a good suggestion but I'd avdise the 460 XVR just lot more.

Shoots .45 Colt, .454 Cassual & .460 S&W.

3 guns in one and well for lack of better words, a s**tLOAD of ammo and reloading variables to tickle you senseless!!!

Brand new & its a performance center product, you know its GOOD!

Looks straight up gangsta at that, just bunnnnnnnnnnnnng massive shiny!!!!!

To add to that, I'm saving to buy a .460 XVR right now, hope to get it before the summer time.

A .50 cal Desert Eagle would make for an excellent first handgun. It's super reliable and the ammo for it is very affordable. Highly recommended for a new shooter :D.

You aren't the only one saving to buy one;). I figured he was set on .50 cal.

Desert Eagle .50AE makes big bada boom. Everyone who I bring out to shoot it, starts off with an apprehensive look on their faces and leaves grinin' ear to ear.

First time ever shooting the DE:

Get one! its a bragging rights pistol...not very practical, extremely expensive, tough to find parts/ammo for...but it makes a BIG F*CKING BOOM! and for most of us "kids" out there...thats all i want. wouldnt recommend for a target pistol though. go ahead and enjoy...

I found the magnum research built 'eagles to be utter crap..i have seldom got a full mag emptied without a malfunk.I have shot several older one (still made in isreal by IMI )in .44 and .357 ,they werent too bad.not real practical .....for anything but still sorta cool.

Hmm the 44 & 50 DE's I've shot were both rental guns that were worn down.

Can tell just looking in the breech the gun has been around for a while and not a single hickup for me. 6'1" & 155lbs.

My buddy who's 6'3" and 285lbs, shot the two same pistols and they acted up for him.

End result - USER ERROR.

The guns malfunctioned for the range officer supervising me at the time as well, but not for me. (The RO's shot it LOTS he said as well an it still gave him problems.)
