Saw a .50AE (black) at Target Sports on the weekend and managed to fondle it for a bit.
I know very little about this pistol except for info found on the net and hollywood. Doesn't appear to have very positive feedback as a reliable shooter eg. cycling issues, picky with ammo, jamming....
So...for those who own one or have experience with one what's the scoop on the .50AE or even the .44 for that matter?
Are they good shooters or an expensive $2,000 conversational piece? Buy or not....

PS....not trying to stir up the pot but looking for some advice

Thanks

Well, there is alot of other firearms id like to buy before a desert eagle. BUt cost is really the only factor that keeps me away.

The truth is they are fun as hell to shoot if you can afford it. Any bystanders within 10 feet an feel the blast and its surprising, but the recoil isn't as much as you would expect.(ive only tried the .44 mag) Its a heavy gun that takes away the recoil, and the rifle-like action is very cool. Very unique gun.

I think the shiny ones are kinda ghey, but ill probably own a black one someday!

I've ever been a huge fan but I have shot the .357, 44 and .50
To be honest I like the .357 most of all, fairly mild to shoot and despite a crappy trigger it shot extremely small groups...and fed factory ammo it had no jams.
I would have liked to have tried the Behlert Custom .44 DE I saw a few years ago, I think around '90 - '91. He had reworked the trigger, done an action job and welded on a comp. It was built for pin shooting and looked like it would have been fun to shoot.

Had a 44MAG DE, traded it off for something bigger.

It was a great gun and yes they can be finicky regarding ammo but run just fine if you do your job.

That requires keeping it clean, replacing the springs when needed and holding it right (locked elbow, no teacupping the mag).

Would like to get another one some day :)

have put a couple thousand rounds through a .44 mag. fun factor 10+. feed issues...never heard about tea cupping the mag though...and i do. mag's starting to get beat up from recoil...bumps on the front of them. i've been told you can buy a .50 barrel and mags as the rest is the same

i have a DE in titanium gold and 50AE. bought it purely as a "look at me" conversation piece. mission accomplished!

the way i compare it is to a ferrari. its flashy, expensive, gets a lot of looks, tough to find parts, and you dont take it out or shoot it that often; but when u do people are always curious and want to try it to say theyve shot a 50.

its a fun pistol, but in no way practical or a daily shooter. there are a hundred guns id go to before trusting it with my life, but if you need a 50 as a home-defense gun...you've got bigger problems!

here's mine, enjoy!

Fun for awhile then the novelty really wears off. I used to have a .44 and would shoot gophers at the range with it.

They are a clunker (heavy) of a gun.

Save your money. Buy something more practical...

The only time they are finicky is when people try to run pussy loads through them. Mine has close to 10,000 rounds through it now, maybe even more. I can count the jams on one hand. I've done in complete set of springs in that time. Bought the gun new in 93 (I think), and its been a great gun.

Funny that all this rummor mill stuff comes from people who never owned the handgun or only used handloads to save a few $$$. I noticed from the last 3 years of owning mine that the 2 rounds I have ever had issues with firing it was because the reloader didn't properly size the case & the second round that I had an issue with ejecting, he didn't load enough powder in it. And this is only 2 rounds out of 1,000's I have shot threw it.
Oh ya as for the first reply post, the ### guy he is reffering to must be me because I have the shinny nicheal 50 AE @ Poco that he is reffering too :p

Lol, to each there own I guess, just a lil too shiny for me. ;) Dont think ive seen yours at the range tho. Sucks that they postponed late nights for the time being. :(

I know the .357 models are picky with ammo and like to jam.

One of my buddies has one in .357 (local calibre restrictions prohibit any of the bigger calibres) and it runs perfectly. He only had to try three or four loads before finding one that works perfectly. From memory he uses Blue Dot.

Anyway, as long as you run reasonably heavy loads the gun runs fine and there is little recoil due to the immense weight and bulk of the gun.

For me, I enjoy shooting it every now and then for a bit of fun but unless I had piles of spare cash I wouldn't buy one as the novelty wares off fairly quickly. It always draws a crowd though :D

yes they need to run hot. But I really don't understand why someone would load them with weak rounds in the first place. The whole point is make a helluva boom.
