Desert Eagles are hilarious

Nope never happened to me. That is one hellva flinch to yank that heavy DA to fire. If someone is doing that then I would say it is not the gun for them...

Shot an IPSC qualifier last year with my DE 50. Not a winning gun but lots of fun. Especially when it gets a bit dark.

Completely useless gun IMO....but one of the most popular handguns at our open house each year IIRC.

Everyone wants to fire one at least once, but I can never understand why anyone would want to own one.

Ridiculously impractical, but about as useful as any other handgun in Canada...

Just pointing that out.

Just the sheer insanity of the gun is what attracts people. Now the Long Barrel with a quality pistol scope, now we're talking acceptable hunting handguns. Unfortunately, we have a bunch of animal loving politicians who think animals prefer getting hunted with rifles and shotguns as opposed to handguns.

The DE in .357 has always appealed to me for some reason.
Then it's not such a $ fickle mistress (most of the time) sitting in the safe.

I have an older (94), black finished IMI made DE in .44 Mag.

Although the gun is fairly large, it is still easily managed, I'm 5" 8" tall so my hands are not that large and I have no issues shooting the gun. It is on the "Hefty' side, but that works to it's advantage, as the weight helps tame the recoil. The gas system aids in taming the recoil as well.

A number of years ago I owned a S&W 629 in .44 Mag. I find my DE is much easier to shoot and control, the recoil is not as harsh on the hands, and getting the DE back on target after each shot is much quicker.

Before I bought my gun I was debating getting a .44 or .50. After comparing the cost of the .44 ammo to the .50 ammo, it was pretty easy to make up my mind which gun to buy! I pick up .44 ammo for around $40.00 for 50 rounds, .50 runs around $65.00 for 20 rounds!!!
Although I'd have liked to buy/own a .50, as I wanted to shoot my DE and not have it sit in my safe due to the cost of ammo, I purchased my .44.

Who knows, perhaps I may add a Ti Tiger Strip .50 to the safe some day as a shoot on occasion DE!

Cost wise the .44 is fairly reasonable to shoot on a regular basis................so I do!

Unlike most semi auto pistols which operate on a 'blow back system', a DE operates on a 'gas impingement system', similar to most AR's, and just like AR's, DE's require regular cleaning, with every moving part 'wetted out' with a good quality lube. I clean and lube mine after 3-4 trips to the range and I've not had any issues with my gun FTF, FTE, etc.

* A few months ago I purchased some Frog Lube CLP and my DE and AR's 'run like clocks' using it!

DE's get a lot of 'bad rap' with people saying that they FTF a lot. IMHO, if you let a DE (*ell any gun!) get dirty/dry, and/or run poor quality ammo through it, they will FTF, etc.

I only shoot Winchester factory 240 gr, jacketed lead tip ammo in my DE. I've read that poor quality/dirty ammo, and reloads (tamed down or hot), using soft cast lead projectiles, etc., will lead to FTF's in DE's. So to date I have stayed with factory ammo, I have only encountered a couple of FTF's this summer. The few times it did this the round got hung up and the bolt did not lock, most likely due to the gun beginning to get dirty.

A DE is a very accurate gun, it's a 'Hoot' to shoot, and if you're 'into' semi auto pistols, it's just one of those guns you HAVE TO HAVE!! :)

I was more using the term useless as a practical item with relative levels of cost.

I suppose if your independently wealthy, the only concern is practicality.

I'll never fault a guy for buying a gun he wants, but I suspect that most people who own DEs just have them sitting in the safe nearly all the time. Safe queens are fine for some people, I only own guns that get used though.

... the vast majority of pistols in Canada don't have a practical purpose other then, "I want one." Since we're in Canada, that should be all the reason one needs.

Owning a legend is hardly ever practical, but more often then not its a lot of fun. Can't wait to get one some day.

I just joined the Desert Eagle 44 mag club, bought a two tone from Del Selins in Vernon. Shot a couple of rounds through it today and it is FUN to say the least. Can't wait to get to the range with it.

Both the DE in any cal and the .500 are awesome to shoot! I wished the .44mag ammo was easier to find in FMJ. The only factory 44 ammo I could ever find had a lead tip and it choked in the DE. Yes the .500 is way more recoil then the DE but both are range stoppers. I recommend electronic ear protection so you can clearly hear the reactions of your neighbours at the range when you start blasting!!! :sniper:

I owned a DE in .357, and it was a wonderful pistol. Very reliable and so much fun because you get the blast of the Magnum cartridge with very little recoil, as the gun is so heavy. My kids LOVED it! :)

If you get one - make sure you load it with hot loads, using fairly heavy bullets...this is the way they run most reliably.
