Detachable Mag or Floor Plate?

I have used detachable mags now for years and never lost one...mind you I carry a spare all the time just in case I rise to the occasion and miss place one. I have also never had any problems with them falling out, jamming or not feeding properly either.

Detachable Mag. You can run your quad or pickup down the bush road and have the gun legally unloaded and the loaded mag on the seat or in your pocket. Not the way I like to hunt, but the moose always turn up when you aren't expecting them. If you pack your mags in the case with your rifle you won't leave them behind. I did once, but never again, now I own 3 mags.

If you get a remington - you can always use a kwik clip conversion to change to a detach mag later if you want. Something to think about.

(i like remmies :))

I prefer either a top loader, or a singleshot. That way you never have to ever worry about losing the mag. What could be worse than getting to your hunt camp and dicovering that your mag is sitting on the kitchen table 3 hrs away.

Well then you would be hunting with a single shot... I thought you liked them. :p

What a silly reason for dismissing a detachable Mag...
What is with this preoccupation with losing magazines... are all you blind mag well and hinged floor plate fanatics suffering from A.D.D. or what. Do you guys regularly forget integral items of your kit????:p
I have been hunting for nearly 35 years and I can only remember two instances of guys forgetting their mags. The guys took some ribbing and hunted single shot or borrowed another mag or gun... the sky never fell in and the earth kept spinning.
I have all three systems including the Browning which can function like all three if you wish! I have no real preference except that my experience is largely with D/M's.
P.S. I have seen the catch fail and a broken solder joint on a spring on floor plate rifles as well in the same number of years.

Detachable, I don't get misplacing the mag as it's always with the rifle, driving oil lease roads is sometimes my only option and the box works best hands down. As for being a lefty check out the Savage website.

I have a hinged floorplate in my M70 30-06 - I don't like it. All of a sudden the plate wouldn't travel far enough to be anchored closed properly and at the most inopportune times it would just fly open. It took a little work and a few shims to get it right again but it was a hassle for awhile. My old PH 303 had a detachable mag - I prefer that better.

D mag for me. Quick to load up/unload and change loads too. I hunt with two loads depending on distance.

Really liking the new center feed Savage mag. Operation has been improved many fold and is very smooth (close to the AI set up I tried which was eery smooth). Easy to use latch and drop free mag. Can be top loaded and would also work well for single feeding (mag acts like a straightline BR follower).

Ideal for those who want a Dmag and a sharp shouldered Wildcat. I think the Tikka/Sako are also center feed?????

Will have to see how it functions this fall.

have used their side release mag system for a few years and it works fine too.

That is a problem wiht how that particualr rifle is (improperly) set up, rather than the floorplate system itself.

Thanks everyone!
A hinged floor plate it will be.
Now just to make up my mind will it be Ruger or Remington ? :)

Go with a Ruger, I just bought a Ruger M77 Mk II in 30-06. The floorplate is well built, and Ruger has the mag release button on the trigger guard...although it is tough to push it does stay in play (the mag). I had a remmy with a detachable mag...the only mag type I dont like is the hidden one, you dont really have any control of emptying your rifle fast if something happens. With a floorplate or detachable you have more control of how fast you can unload if somthing came up.

A DM works if it is reliable and goes in smoothly and positively every time. I've been disappointed with some of the Remington products. ( I sold them for 6 months about 5 years ago)

The thing is can you do it under stress every time - like, you're driving around the bend, and ther's the moose of your dreams walking towards the bush. Try practicing inserting the loaded mag AND reefing one in the chamber from the inserted mag, then retry with an empty mag in the gun and tossing a round in the chamber like you can with a regular non DM magazine. If you can, try that exercise, fire at a target, then rechamber a round, either using the full mag or empty mag and some other ammo source. Try to introduce a bit of stress in the situation, then see what your time and hits are.

For me , hunting, no question, travelling with an open action, tossing a round in ,firing is a lot faster. your mileage may vary....
