I'm considering buying a 700SPS or SPS Varmint, and I'm wondering if there are any benefits to having a DM if I go for the SPS or if its just a preference thing?

Its one more thing to lose but I find its easier to unload, the rounds don't go boing... all over the place if your not careful. I think most presicion shooters just shoot single feeding their rounds. Get what you like.

I too preffer detachable magazines, but as an irony, I have more rifles wiith blind mags.
As for the road hunting, (what I'd like to call spot-and-shoot, not hunting from a truck) it is easier to have a push feed action and a round in your hand.

The US sport/civilian/police sniper community have disliked the Remington 700 detachable magazine in .308 for many years. The short action and tight dimensions mean those magazines are almost too small for properly seated bullets. The clip mechanism is not as positive as what the guys seem to be looking for. Hence the Kwik-Clip conversions, the gunsmithed variations that take an M14 magazine, and the expensive HS Precision detachable mags. Solutions to problems the manufacturer isn't willing to address.

If you are hunting with a vehicle, I agree that a detachable magazine is desirable, but for paper shooting, they are unnecessary.
