Is there any easy way to determine date of manufacture on one of these? Reverse of unit is stencilled : Detector, Mine No. 4A, ZA 27932, WLH / 7 / 49 and Serial # plate is stamped 26871. Carry pack only, no transit chest. Not in my possession, so no pics. Does the 7/ 49 indicate May, 1949 perhaps?

Formerly the property of a Dominion, Saskatchewan and Manitoba Land Surveyor and used as a pin finder. Google has not provided much in the way of useful examples.

Thanks to all who provide input. Kayceel

You may not pin it down to a date but I think what you have is WW2 and not postwar. 4B and 4C are post war, but my 4A, serial 29070 is wartime based on paint colour (brown, post war are green) and the canvas bag which is dated 1944. I'm fairly certain I have a complete rig unmolested in its transit chest. Your date is earlier which suggests WW2, 1944 would be my bet.

Thank you for that info. This one is painted green so will check for a repaint and also check for a date on the pack. Kayceel
