Determining Barrel Length

Tomorrow I'm taking the plunge. I'll be cutting the barrel down, on one of my M14's. In the shop, on a lathe, then recrown the barrel.

Question:A semi-automatic, centre-fire firearm with a barrel length less than 470 mm is restricted. So I plan on cutting it to 19". So where is it measured from? The crown to the bolt face? I figured I'd close the bolt, slide a rod down the barrel with a known length and measure it that way. Any suggestions?

Thanks

X3, I agree and I have seen this info on the CFC site, however, Don't be surprised if you come accross an uninformed law enforcement officer or customs agent who tries to tell you that it is measured from the front of the action. We had an american silhouette shooter (Cathy Winstead) who was denied entry for one of her rifles by a customs agent who insisted her rifle barrel was too short after measuring from the front of the action.
