Determining Barrel Twist

How does one go about measuring the barrel twist of a rifle?

Open reloading manual to the page that gives manufacturers twist rate info.

take your cleaning rod and put a nylon brush (tight fitting) the size of the bore on the end and slowly push it down the barrel. When one full revolution of the rod has taken place, mark it where it is at the end of the barrel and pull it out. If its 7 inches to the end of the brush plus or minus you will have a 1 in 7 twist 10 inches 1 in 10 twist and so on.

I'm not sure I'll find it in a reloading manual - it's an old Spanish Mauser in 7x57. Marked "Fabrica de Armas - Oviedo 1910"

Barrel twist

You can use a nylon or bronze brush on your cleaning rod, use a new or very good condition brush. You push the brush in or pull it towards you marking it, until you have one turn on the rod then measure the distance travelled. There is some slippage using this method and "ie a 1 in 8 may measure 8.25 or a bit more", but it is a 1 in 8 twist.
