Determining sight heights ?

I am in the process of cutting down a M96 , 6.5 x 55 for my grandson to use. He is a tiny little guy so weight is a serious concern, and I cut the steped barrel to 20" , reduced the stock in every place possible, to remove as much weight as possible for him. With a scope on it the guns weight is still to much, so I am going with iron sights. I am on a tight budget, but want it to be a decent hunting rifle for him.

How do I determine the front sight heights I will need If I go with the original 96 rear sight on the shortened 20" barrel ? Obviously the front sight that was on the 29" barrel will be out to lunch if I mount it on the 20" cut barrel .
Another option I am considering is a peep mounted on the receiver/action where the scope bases are now , but again the front sight height will need to be determined to match the rear height , and I would like to be at least close to correct in the beginning.
 
Roughly you will want the front sight to be 50 thou lower than the rear sight and work from there... Measurements are to the center of the bore.
 
Ok and thanks for help ,both here and in some PM's. Now I have a good starting point to work from and can get things progressing. With luck I will have some front sights in the muzzle loader parts box that I can dovetail into the barrel .
 
What I do for rough calculation, is take the od of the barrel at the original position. Now measure the od of where you want to put the sight. Take the difference, divide by 2 and cut down the front blade by that much.
