I bought a deutsche werke model 1 recently to give to my son for his 11th birthday. It will be used strictly at the range until he gets his hunting/firearms license next year. I fixed up the stock, re-blued the barrel, and took it out to the range to test fire it before I give it to him.

Was I ever impressed!! 3" group at 50yd using a front sight post about as thick as my pinky finger. I've shot much more expensive .22's and have not achieved groupings like that. I was in awe. I'm no sharpshooter either!

Well his birthday is Sunday, and I don't know who is more anxious, me or him!
 
I used to have one of those rifles too. My first shot was a 10 @50 yards and I also shot 3" groups using some cheap bulk ammo. I couldn't believe how accurate that little gun was.
Your son will have a lot of fun shooting it.
 
I have a couple of Deutsche Werke .22 rifles hanging at the wall and another couple in pieces. May be I should put them together and find out which one shoots best.

What I'm really looking for is a Deutsche Werke pistol !!!!
Any hints would be appreciated.

Nice guns but I'd go with a bolt single shot for a 1st gun. Those little german .22's have 3 positions ; open , cocked & fired. There is no half #### on those babies.
We had one kicking around at our's & every secound uncles house when I was a kid.
My grandpa shot himself in the face with one; his fault mind you. Ours was marked 22 long rifle in very small letters at the base of the barrel. It looked as though it was dunked in a varnish bbl at the factory. No one noticed the 22 long rifle marked until it parked a 22 short halfway up in the bbl.
Neat guns still, but I'm a little leary as one for a boys 1st gun.

Is this a different rifle than the Deutche Werke single shot with the hinge type action? On my father's rifle (now mine) you load a cartridge, pull back the bolt, and leave the bolt in the top notch. That's cocked and safe. To ready to fire, you have to pull back on the bolt slightly to relieve the pressure and lower it to the firing position.

Put the rifle in the safety notch then drop it; if that bolt jumps it'll maybe unlock or maybe it'll drop onto the trigger. I think that's how Grampa got shot. He slid it on top of a load of bales...where there was an axe sitting.
Bullet went in the corner of his mouth and then out the back of his jaw...took a couple of teeth too.
I still think it was his fault, but still...bad.
 
I think for a young kid, in the beginning, you walk with them on the hunt, and have them insert a cartridge only when ready to shoot.
 
Oddly enough I just came across one of these little rifles as well. It looks like this one...

It still has the "D" circle dormant lion badge on the side of the butt stock.

When I checked I could not see light down the barrel but I suspect it needs a clean. I was super happy to find the web page above with one simple search.

Neat little rifle, If the bore is good I'll have to see if I can buy it off the owner. :)

Necro post update...

Well I wanted to buy it but instead I inherited it when my Father in Law passed away a few months ago. :(

I couldn't see down the barrel as it had a cleaning brush stuck inside... Looked like it unscrewed while the previous owner was cleaning it and they just left it in... Just a few taps with the rest of the cleaning rod and it's all better. :D

Kind of a neat rifle. :)
 
I have one from my grandfather as well. Back when the registry started, I had posted pics on an American site and no one seemed to know what it was. Are they more common in Canada?
