a choke.
Or them twisty chokey things.
Can one shoot steel or slugs through them?
They are fuggly as no tomorrow, but should one consider them
if the right deal comes along?
No pawkitt full of chokes, nor the passport to swapp'im.

Never did know the answer to this.

Polychokes made prior to 1954 ( I could be wrong on that date) can not be recommended for steel shot. The reason is they did not know the metallurgy of the steel used in the polychoke

Polychokes made after 1954 could be used with steel shot

Here's how you tell the difference between a pre and post 1954 choke

If the choke tube is knurled, at the end, it is a post 54 choke and OK for steel shot

pre 54 chokes will have vertical lines or (groves) at the end of the choke.

however........the silver solder used to fix the polychoke to the barrel will not withstand the steel shot, and if it does most of the patterns are meh at best, #6 heavy shot in a 1 ounce load however works awesome, if your dog won't retrieve ducks then I suggest shooting over frozen lakes to you can walk out and retrieve them yourself, or wait until spring and use the boat

Looky, let me know if yer in the market for one. I'm thinking of taking one off a barrel this week.

They are not all dimensionally the same so one has to make sure you have the one for your barrel diameter plus they are not something a backyard Joe can install if one wants them done properly. My old ones were silver soldered in and I would be shocked in any smith in canada can still install one
Cheers
