Dialed in my 8.5 bear stopper today....very happy

Personally I dont trust optics for a defensive situation. Way too many things to go wrong when you need it in a split second. Battery could die, it could be turned off or not bright enough to pick up the dot, rear lens could get obscured by mud or debris, moisture could get in and ruin it etc. I like bead or ghost ring although that bead would be useless unless you know how low to aim with slugs. A raised bead would be ideal for me but to each their own.

Great Groups.. When you decide it is time to shoot at the bear it is point and put rounds down Range anyways. I like the Red dot and if nothing goes wrong you have a fast and accurate setup for defense. If it is broken when you need it then oh well and you should be able to hit him within the 30 yards that he will be covering towards you VERY fast by putting him in the rub and pulling the trigger.

PS: What it REALLY needs is a Bayonet or Breacher to Ram into him when you run out of all four rounds in four-five seconds;)

The optic is useless on a 8.5 barrel.

Bead sight is also much faster.

My opinion.

Besides this its perfect.

You are right, with a front bead only you can miss as fast as you want to. with the short barrel a bead would be nearly useless because of the short sight radius. you could miss with slugs by a mile even at short ranges. If you don't believe me, try it for yourself. Remember the bead sight was stolen from shotguns with long barrels and a vent rib. the rib acts like a rear sight. and with a 3000hr battery life (thats 125 days) you could turn the thing on at the beginning of hunting season and not turn it off until closing day

Other then the upside down pics I think the shotgun looks great, do you have a better overall shot of it?
Seems to shoot well enough to. Glad you found something that suited your needs.

Ya sure.

Do you have this particular shotgun ?

I do.

i couldnt hit #### with mine but its fun to play with so i bought a marlin gbl to pack around in the bush with peep sights on it

Good for you. I have put more than 300 rounds through a 8.5 inch barrel shotgun I sold it because I prefer the greater velocity with a longer barrel and my buddy wanted it. the reason you are mistaken is simple geometry, look it up. Or a better example would be; have you ever seen a shorty AR with only a front sight?, or even a pistol manufactered after 1930?. as for an optic being "useless" on a short barrel, have you ever seen an IPSC open gun?. If you want to hit something you have to aim at it and thats all there is to it.

Very intelligent to compare an AR range with a 8.5 barrel shotgun with a range of 10-25 yards.

I don't know if the argument is that the Optic is useless, just more the fear of not having it work when you need it most. Lets face it; if you walked around the the optic on in a low carry and ran into a bear then the red dot would be a very fast and accurate way to engage. However if you keep it in a scabbard like most and the red dot catches when you go to pull it out, you have a problem!

As long as it is setup to your liking and you are well trained at your setup, then you should be fine.

alright what about the IPSC open gun? or the iron sighted pistol?. Please regail us with your knowledge.

I have nothing more to say other than that putting optics on a VERY short range shotgun (8.5 barrel) that is mainly used as a bear defence tool (must be quick and reliable) is useless.

Bead sight does the job.

Thats my opinion.

I run a 6.5" shotgun with a red dot and for Irons I use the sight picture offered by the standoff provided by the after market side saddle rail attachment. A little hokey and rectangularish, but. Yes the red dot can fail, but it works and is very accurate.

No doubt a red dot is 'quicker' and easier... but it's a little more 'snaggy' and easy to damage. Plus you better make sure that dot is on alllll the time. ;) I like my predator shotgun to be as low profile as possible.

Where did your score the Urbino stock? How do you like it compared to a standard speedfeed pistol grip stock?

The nice thing about these newer red dots like the TRS is that you can leave them on.

They are good for about 3000 hrs.

Thats about 125 days or 4 months.

Always on, always ready for 4 months at a time anyways.

Do you have a "similar" optic or a Bushnell TRS25? Because everyone I've spoken to who has run thousands of rounds through their shotguns has nothing but good things to say.

Ultracompact for fast target acquisition
Ideal for plinking, turkey hunting or tactical uses
3-MOA dot
Tested in heavy-recoiling rifles
A nonmagnifying, ultracompact red-dot sight engineered for fast acquisition on close-in targets. Ideal for plinking, turkey hunting or tactical applications, it has a 3-MOA dot and will stand up to heavy-recoiling rifles and shotguns. Recoil-tested in rifles up to .375 H&H. 3,000-hour battery life. Weaver-rail-compatible.

my red dot is a bushnell trophy with 4 interchangeable reticles which do not interchange any more . i did not abuse this in any way and had it on a 5.56 rifle

In all the excitement I forgot to say to the OP; thats a nice rig, it looks really handy. You certainly can't argue with that group either. You would be amazed at how those shorty barrels will pattern with choke tubes too.
