Diana 240 questions

I’m looking for a first air gun for my boys for Christmas (yes leaving it a bit late). I’m thinking of the Diana 240. I can’t locate one in stock online. So two questions - is it a good choice for a 11 and 7 year old and does anyone know where I can find one? Alternatively what would your suggestion be for an alternative.

imo the 240 is probably going to be a bit heavy for a 7 yo.

Personally I like the sights on the older diana pellet guns better (the metal ones, not the press on plastic front sight with fiber in it) so if you can score a well kept older one then don't hesitate.

He is a drop shipper, so 99% chance he doesn't have it in stock. Same with Hero Outdoors if he checks there.
 
Maybe do some calling around for older stores that have not adapted to online sales yet.

Yes the 24 is indeed the precursor of the 240.
Other difference is that the 240 also has a plastic safety and trigger guard instead of metal.

If you could find a model 20 that would be better for your 7yo. Finding very nice used dianas is hard, most people like them enough not to sell them :)

My daughters favorite at that age and up was a very old Diana model 23, light but accurate.

I have the 24C and it's probably a little heavy, although it feels heavier than it is due to the rear-weight bias of break barrels.
There are some youth air rifles designed specifically for youth like the Ruger Explorer, Crosman Raven, or Stoeger X3 although I don't have experience with any of them. I suspect they're all big-box consumer goods from Chinese OEMs at similar price points.

You likely won't receive any mail order item in time for Xmas though. I have an order from AGS that's more than a week overdue.
The Stoeger looks like it's available at the Canadian Tire in Castlegar, while the Raven is in stock with DL Airgun

The Trail store also looks like they have a few Daisy Red Ryders left (1 wood, 3 with the pink plastic furniture) which are, of course, seasonally appropriate.

Incidentally, Diana's youth model is the Model 11, while the polymer-stocked 24/240 is the Panther 21.

I've seen it mentioned in a few comments, and it would be surprising if similar sized/power models from the same manufacturer didn't use the same parts. I think you'd have to contact a vendor to be sure though. The models shown on Diana's website have some differences in the sights and barrel finish between the 240 and the 21 FBB, but that could just be a recent tweak. On DL Airgun's catalog, they look, well:

DL Airguns is usually pretty quick to respond if you just want to ask them a question, although they're out of stock for all three Dianas mentioned.
 
I think you need 2 rifles because of the age difference between your boys. A gun suited to your 7 year old, both weight and length wise, plus cocking effort, will likely not be well suited to the older boy. Unless your 7 year old is big for his age. Or were you planning on 2 rifles?

FYI, if you're still looking, the 240 look like they're in stock at Airhead Air Guns out of Manitoba
