Well I went to the local gunshop today looking for a "hi power" pellet rifle. I've been researching online and figured I'd go with a Crosman Nitro Venom .177. Based on price and specs I figured this rifle would do the trick.

I had a Diana 34 years ago that I bought new in 1993. Shot it for several years and then sold it to a friend who still owns it. The shop didn't have any Crosman guns but he had some real nice Diana RWS 34's in stock. Man are these ever nice looking pellet guns!

They've changed quite a bit since I owned mine. Much nicer wood stock than my old one and some very nice fibre optic sights as well. A way better looking gun than the one I used to own. Interestingly enough this much nicer gun is only $40 more than when I bought mine back in 93.

Needless to say I put a few bucks down on it and I'll be picking it up next week. Looking forward to shooting this sweet little pellet rifle soon. :D
 
What is the longevity of the Diana rifles compared to say a Benjamin or Gamo with the same fps specs? I see the Benj and Gamo are about $100 cheaper, but I'm assuming the extra $ is well worth the German quality? I'd like to get one in 22 for some bird and squirrel control around the yard. I'm a newb to the air club.
 
You get what you pay for.I tuned a RWS34 /.22 and it' getting 700 fps.Kills crows,grouse And gophers out to 35 yards.Also a tree eating porcupine with one headshot.Before the chorus starts up they are a pest in AB and usually killed on sight........Harold......a notch up from RWS/Diana is the Weihrauch line.
 
got the 460 , and 350 magnum, super accurate, .5 inch @ 50 easy.

These distances were measured with a range finder, from muzzle to target..

Just for shizzels i shot over the crony with a few air rifles using my lightest and heaviest ammo in 177 and 22. 177 Laser 6.5gr and Beeman Silver Arrow in 11.5gr, 22 cal RWS Hobby 11.9gr and Wiehrauch Magnum 21gr.

Just to give an idea of light and heavy ammo choices, I shoot in the middle of those two weights, and of course accuracy is the third part of the equation. As you can see the 34 is a little faster than the HW 97k, but a much harsher/violent feel to the shot, the 97 is very smooth.
 
Levi! Could you elaborate on the shooting of springer air guns,I have purchased a couple Dianas and would like tips if possible!

Sure.
The forend, just leave the rifle set in the palm of your hand, do not hold it on the sides except to prevent it from tipping on its side, most of the control will be from the pistol grip anyway..
the pistol grip , hold the gun lightly all around the pistol grip, but leave your thumb up to put a bit of pressure to counter or resist the recoil, the amount will change point of impact a bit, just fine tune it to where your shooting good groups..
the shoulder, again lightly against the shoulder, same for your face on the stock..
Bottom line, no lateral pressure, hold the gun upright as mentioned, and only a bit of pressure with the thumb, like your giving someone the thumbs up...lol
never rest the forend on a bag, rest your hand in the bag, and your forend in the hand...
You will find from day to day , that your groups might shift some , you can adjust scope if you wish , your call, but most likely it will return to where the zero was, your just putting lateral pressure without knowing, could be your face on the stock, or 2 tight into the shoulder, or you forgot to add a bit of pressure with your thumb..
If you can't group at all, its just that your doing a few things different, and just need to think all the factors.
The spring must be able to go through its forward/back motion without you changing the way it does that, reason for the hold, and follow through..
It will make you a better shot with any gun, just gotta keep working at it..
Winter indoors if you can get 10 meters is pretty sweet.. and duct seal is just awesome as a backstop...

Understand all but thumb were in relation to the safety would you place it and does it touch the gun??

I've been having a lot of fun with this gun down in my basement and I will be keeping this one for sure. I put a Tasco red dot on it cuz my eyes can't see the regular sights well enough anymore. First time using a red dot scope and it's pretty good so far. :)

As you grip the pistol grip , your thumb would be in a vert position on the tang, not wrapped around . This kid in the pic below has his thumb wrapped around,and went a bit extreme on the forend hold, but he is working on what will work for him. If I was to correct his hold, I would say no need to keep your hand like that, its not stable,and he will get to shaking soon. And the thumb could come up a bit , and contact the left side of the tang, just below the spring chamber rear housing..mostly the pressure on the rear of the tang is to counter the pressure pulling the trigger, another area to focus on..

Levi many thanks I am working on what you have posted and consistency is improving,took a red wing at sixty four yards (range finder)and getting more hits in the thirty to forty range than before.Will keep all in the loop!
