Did anyone else know about this?

I vaguely remember a WW2 vintage war film where a Nazi submarine landed on the shore of Hudson Bay and the crew took off marching and singing across Manitoba and Saskatchewan. I can't remember their destination or supposed mission, but it was pretty corny, even for Hollywood.

I saw that movie. They even stopped at a farm and helped bring in the harvest. Some wanted to stay on the communal style farm. One of the officers, had a Luger and killed a deserter.

They were trying to get to the St Lawrence River, eventually or New York, so they could get a ship and eventually get back to Germany.

They were all captured in the end as far as I recall.

Corny but par for the timeframe.

There is an 'ol wives tale of a Uboat in Lake Ontario during WW2. As the tale goes, someone on the Niagara Escarpment bluff was signaling Morse code style with a light source (flashlight, lantern w hood...the story varies here) around the Grimsby/Stoney Creek/Cave Springs area.
A light source replied from the lake. Several apparent witnesses and an investigation followed as the authorities were alerted. This activity occurred for several concurrent nights then stopped, the assumption being that Fritz got back on the Uboat one night and they left back down the St. Lawrence and out to sea undetected.

In the 1940's and still to present, this area is predominantly rural agriculture type land the Escarpment holding a commanding view of Lake Ontario.

Is the tale even probable? I don't know, but this is the essence of the tale none the less.

Impossible to traverse the St Lawerance lock system without being noticed. Regarding Bearhunters movie/ story of a German U boat in Hudson Bay. I once asked Marc Milner if a U-boat had ever been sent there and he said it was never done to his knowledge and if anyone would know it would be him. So while the Germans did have manned and unmanned weather stations in Greenland and a landing or two on Canadain shores HB was just simply not where the action was.

That lock system was entertained in 1954. It took 4 years almost to the day to complete, open for business 1958. What's the draft on a U-boat vs. the shallows of the river in the 1940's (Lachine rapids?)

No there are six locks on the St Lawerance that have been around for about a hundred years or more (check out the Cardinal Cut) The building of todays St Lawerance system was, yes, post war, and done so ocean going ships can access the Great Lakes. Till then there was a system of channels, canals and locks to get past the numerous rapids. I really doubt any U Boat crew would trying shooting rapids (both ways) and NOT be noticed doing so.

at least he keeps us entertained. Sounds like he is psychotic and delusional. It has been estimated (read it somewhere) that at any given time.20% of the entire population of planet earth has mental issues. That is a lot of sick people walking around everywhere.

.
One U-Boat actually travelled through the Great Lakes System and ended up at Chicago, on Lake Michigan. This was the U-505.

:D Figured it would not be too long before someone commented on this one. It is at the Museum of Science and Technology, at 5700 South Lakeshore Drive in Chicago
